If you enjoy fine wines, you are probably already aware of the accolades bestowed upon the Finger Lakes viticultural area by such notables as James Molesworth and Dan Berger. What you may not realize is that the area has a history of wine grape production stretching back more than a century and a half. In A Sense of Place, Christopher Missick traces the fascinating evolution of the wine industry in the Finger Lakes region of New York State.

More than a 'Who's Who in the Finger Lakes', the book begins with the geology of the region, introduces us to the agrarian nature and character of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and progresses to the world events that, with luck and pluck and a dash of genius, resulted in the successful introduction of Vitis vinifera to the region. Missick then presents a cast of characters, who today strive to unlock the secrets of Finger Lakes terroir, while coaxing elixirs from rambunctious vines growing upon sedimentary shales in a capricious climate. In the process, he introduces us to his own family and Villa Bellangelo Winery, and shares the excitement of living in a region of such vinicultural promise.

The book also includes a section on wine tasting that explains the characteristics and nuances of wine, as well as a wine tasting journal in which to analyze and record impressions of wines as they are tasted.

If you enjoy wine and learning about the history of the region where it's produced, this book is for you. It would be of special value to anyone planning to visit the Finger Lakes AVA (there are QR codes throughout the book that enable the reader to access further information on various topics by scanning with smartphone or tablet), or to local wine-tasting novices.
