Book Description

March 15, 1999 1563085658 978-1563085659 1

Celebrating nearby nature and the marvels of our own backyards, this book helps you introduce children to the world around them. With quality children's literature and simple activities, you can cultivate a child's sense of wonder and joy and teach him or her the importance of living in harmony with nature. These projects span the curriculum and are presented in reproducible format, so they're easy to use. Highlighting the five senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch), they build connections between students and the land and create in young learners a sense of place-a true necessity for living in the world today. Grades K-6.

This book opens your eyes to the wonders of the world through picture books. It gives easy to deliver effective lessons to go along with them. If you are an elementary educator or an outdoor educator it should be in your library and worn with use.

5.0 out of 5 stars An awesome resource., December 18, 2009
This review is from: A Sense of Place: Teaching Children About the Environment with Picture Books (Paperback)
Author Kriesberg realizes children only learn so much through abstract teaching. Far more information is retained if it can be made real, i.e. through nature nearby. Elementary and middle school aged children more easily grasp concepts if they experience them and Kriesberg offers hundreds of ways to engage students. It's broken up into three sections:
I.Where do we live and who lives with us?
2.How does it work?
3.How do we protect it?
The book is valuable even if you don't use the children's books suggested to go along with the ideas presented in each section. That being said, those books I did check out of the local library did fit in with the lesson plans.

I recommend "A Sense of Place" for any teacher looking to incorporate more nature into their students lives and do it in a way that teaches perspective.
