This graphic-novel version of the story of two sisters who live at different ends of the intellectual and emotional spectrum is a success both in its claim to merely adapting Austen and in the visual and narrative apertures it gives new readers of her nineteenth-century prose. The story unfolds almost entirely in dialogue (whereas Austen�s original was carried largely by letters exchanged), and Liew�s artwork is fully colored in soft and luminescent period hues, and his figures have a nearly bobble-headed tininess that makes them a welcome fit in antique parlors. Butler�s introduction is wise, and the story�s vocabulary and syntax are gently updated to make for smooth reading by those unfamiliar with Austen. The genteel poverty, the romance, and the family affairs remain authentic and vivid, with a subtle glaze of humor in the characters� thought balloons and expressive faces. artwork is adorable. i like it better than the pride & prejudice marvel illustrated. Marianne is cute, Elinor is appropriately still pretty, but more mature. story is written along a similar bend as the Emma Thompson movie version. a great way to introduce the basic story to younger boys who'd rather die than read the actual novel. Wonderful way to bring intrest to the story to a preteen girl. thankfully not detailed enough for a teen to use as a cliffnote-version, so they'd be forced to still read the full novel. considering sending copies to preteen girls for xmas!

I was blown out of my swivel chair by "Sense and Sensibility", the Marvel graphic novel. The thing is just adorable. It's done in pinks and pastels and tasteful little doll-like characters that warmed up my heart like a toaster. For any fan of the book, or for any person with a beating heart, this book is a must-impulse-buy. It's an excellent adaptation that is surprisingly thorough by Nancy Butler, and so much money in the bank for artist Sonny Liew.

Seriously, Sonny Liew's artwork makes the entire adaptation work. If you haven't heard of him before, I recommend a large dose of Googling to preview some of his characters. The faces and features for all of the characters in "Sense and Sensibility" really stand out and match the personalities in the book; and bonus, you can recognize the characters immediately on every page. The last Marvel adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice" has been a disappointment for me in the illustration department; with its 70's-tastic purple-lipped-ladies with menacing eyes and bosoms strewn hither and tither. I think Marvel got it right with Liew, who deeply understands that a sweet story needs pretty pictures.
The story of the Dashwood sisters by Austen is endearing on its own, with the romantic twists and the "coming-of-age" for all its characters. Just like other Austen stories, the many adaptations and films have embedded their ups and downs in our lovey dovey psyche. I think Marvel's take is a worthy read or buy, if anything to remind you of how complex and rich the original story is.

Nancy Butler, who successfully translated Jane Austen's superlative "Pride and Prejuduce" into graphic novel format for Marvel Comics, here attempts the same feat for Jane Austen's earlier novel, "Sense and Sensibility." "S&S", as its fans know, might be a more difficult challenge, as much of the story is told through letters, while the plots turns on the very different approaches to romance of two long-suffering sisters. Sonny Liew provides the necessary graphic artisty.
