Book Description

June 1993 0761642838 978-0761642831
Imagine not being able to make sense of your senses-of being unable to accurately process what you see, hear, feel, or experience every moment of the day.

Imagine being a child who has a sensory integrative disorder. Such children don't know how to cope with the different sensory input they receive. They have difficulty organizing information and performing the many complex tasks necessary for learning and functioning in the world.

This sensitive book, written in easy-to-understand language for parents of children who have problems integrating sensory input, will open the door to understanding and treating the disorder. The authors-Maryann Colby Trott, M.A, a teacher; Marci K. Laurel, M.A., CCC-SLP, a speech-language pathologist; and Susan L. Windeck, M.S., OTR/L, an occupational therapist-have had years of experience in working with children who have sensory disorders.

Included in this valuable, 70-page manual are a brief, simple discussion of the tactile and vestibular systems as well as a discussion of praxis and arousal. Readers who wish to learn more may refer to the bibliography. Chapter 6 includes information about how a sensory integrative disorder affects the child's life as well as the parents', information about therapy and school, and some suggestions for meeting the challenges ahead. Parents might want to share this information with other family members and friends as well as teachers. Appendix B contains suggestions for teachers. If a child is receiving therapy, the child's therapist can provide the parents with more specific information.

The suggested therapeutic techniques are straightforward and nurturing. They respect the child's dignity and are easy to implement. They're fun, too! The world comes to us through our senses. SenseAbilities helps parents and professionals help children learn how wonderful the world really is.

This review is from: Senseabilities : Understanding Sensory Integration/Pkg of 5 Books, Looseleaf Packet and Folder (Paperback)
This is the first book that helped me understand the world my daughter is experiencing or sensing. She has a sensory integration dysfunction and most people have never heard of one! At the start of each school year I hand the teacher this book and tell her to read about my daughter and what causes her to act as she does. This way the teacher can look at the world through the eyes of my daughter and realize that she is not just being a difficult obstinate child. She truly has a real problem that teachers need to be aware of when dealing with her. Thanks to the authors for explaining to me what she is going through and how we can help her.
