Both an exciting celebration of city life and a show-and-tell about the five senses, this photo-essay will draw even very young children. Clear, direct words and unframed pictures show children in the packed streets of an unnamed city, where they see the skyline and hear trains passing by, go inside tall buildings, and travel in a subway car, holding on to the pole. The small things they watch and do are fun, too—they taste a warm pretzel and smell flowers at the corner store. Even when things aren’t quite so pleasant (there’s all that smelly garbage on pickup day), the beat of the crowded places is amazing. The photos show children of many different cultures having fun alone and together in the magical city. Preschool-Grade 1. --Hazel Rochman
