Format: Audio CD
For "Sensitivity" and his post-1986 work, Ralph Tresvant's voice had matured from its squeaky Michael Jackson manqué to a more polished high tenor tone. Of course, his voice was still perfect and best suited for romantic/good-guy vehicles and 1990's "Sensitivity" worked like a charm. Producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis had worked with Tresvant's group New Edition on their 1988 album Heart Break. For his solo album, Tresvant employed the two producers, and this is their finest song of the Ralph Tresvant CD. The production team had also worked with Alexander O'Neal, and "Sensitivity" is reminiscent of his work, only with a lighter touch and voice on top. But really this song is probably only going to work with a singer with a soft, appealing voice and a winsome personality. Of course, that's Tresvant's deal here, and he does it extremely well. Perhaps the biggest win here is that Tresvant made sensitivity sound like a virtue. He didn't make it sound wimpy or wishy-washy and didn't seem to use it as a ploy to get even more dates. This song was recorded at Minneapolis' heralded Flyte Time Studios. While a fair amount of early-'90s R&B didn't weather the times all that well, "Sensitivity" succeeds due in part to Tresvant's vocals and the classic R&B essence and melodic sense of producers Jam and Lewis. If you can find the various remix's to this song you're also in for treat.
