Every child has a unique pattern of taking in and responding to information from the senses. Most young children learn to build on their own individual capacities and accept help from others as they learn to cope with their environment. But some children need help in overcoming the difficulties they face when responding to information from their senses in order to achieve the self-regulation they need to explore the world around them. This book is written for a multidisciplinary audience of infant-family professionals. The authors integrate and synthesize knowledge from a variety of fields to help readers understand sensory development and learn about effective assessment and intervention approaches.

Ordered this directly form Zero to Three Publishers. As a lay person, but fairly experienced with sensory integration, I found this book EXTREMELY helpful. Even the anecdotes illustrate approaches we may have tried and why they didn't work, and what might. It is a bit heavy on the jargon--I suspect it is written for OTs, but please give it a shot if you have a child with an unintegrated morrow reflex, or other sensory integration challenges, especially if you have an infant. Great information, but this book is probably more geared towards Occupational therapists etc. Although I am a pharmacist, it's probably too much technical information for me as a Mom. I would probably recommend "The Out of Sync Child" instead.

I find it particularly useful when helping parents understand sensory integration, followed by planning activities that will be helpful for their child.
