Book Description

March 1999 0761671005 978-0761671008
Therapists, teachers, and parents need resources to help children who experience difficulties in the classroom. Occupational therapists have collaborated with physical therapists and speech therapists to design activities for children that maximize opportunities for sensory integration and gross-motor, fine-motor, and oral-motor development. The authors of Sensory Motor Handbook, 2nd Edition-Julie Bissell, M.A., OTR, Jean Fischer, M.A., OTR, Carol Owens, OTR, and Patricia Polcyn, OTR-have experience in education and knowledge of the neurological principles underlying the development of sensory processing and motor performance as they relate to learning and behavior. This valuable and insightful professional resource is designed to assist those who are working with children in special education. It purposely avoids medical terminology, to assist the special education professional as well as the layperson. Sensory Motor Handbook, 2nd Edition will provide teachers with hundreds of suggestions to help meet sensory and motor needs in the classroom. It also will provide parents and children with many entertaining, easy-to-implement activities. Aimed at preschool to fourth grade level, these activities also can be used with people of all ages who have developmental disabilities. This fully illustrated 220-page manual contains: *

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, November 27, 2007

This review is from: Sensory Motor Issues in Autism (Spiral-bound)
I was expecting some useful "excercises" to try with my child, but there were very limited ideas and mostly for pre-schoolers and younger. Few hints were aimed to school age children; however, they were more appropriate for children with higher functions abilieties (i.e. Aspergen syndrome) while my child is low function.
I returned the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sound intervention ideas, September 29, 2005
By
Autism Consultant (Nashville, TN, USA) - See all my reviews
As a professional in the field of applied behavior analysis and autism, I often do not agree with interventions recommended by occupational therapists (the author is an OT) that target inappropriate sensory behaviors displayed by individuals with an autism spectrum disoder. However, this book makes a point of recommending age-appropriate interventions, as well as ways to teach individuals with an ASD to monitor their own sensory-seeking behaviors. The book is full of case examples and practical intervtions. It is short and easy to read, which makes it a valuable resource for parents and teachers. One caution - this book DOES NOT USE PEOPLE-FIRST LANGAUGE! If you can get past that fault, then it's a great resource.
