5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book to rediscover your humaness!
This is a great book and a must read! It shows that if you slow down and take your time and really use your senses, your life would be much richer. Why is this unrealistic (as one reviewer mentioned)? Maybe most americans aren't up with the idea of living fully (and i don't mean with money or material things). we could learn a few things from the Europeans. They know...

When I first picked up The Sensual Home I was pleased. The cover material feels like velvet and the cover photo of a cat at a window evokes a sense of peace and harmony. However, the content is somewhat disappointing. Although the photos are beautiful, the author presents rather basic, commonplace knowledge regarding sensual elements used in home decorating. In addition, the text type is not a standard font but an unusual print style that is sometimes annoying and at odds with the beautiful photography. The Database chapter does give practical tips but in small print that is again difficult to read. This could be a better book if it contained just more photos of the same quality as presented. It goes on the coffee table.

Maybe most americans aren't up with the idea of living fully (and i don't mean with money or material things). we could learn a few things from the Europeans. They know how to enjoy life. I'd also reconmend A Natural History of the Senses by Diane Ackerman. Our senses are what make us humans.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiration and reminder of the simple pleasures in life., December 6, 1998
This review is from: The Sensual Home (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful coffee table book that one can pick up and read for inspiration and enjoyment. Reminding us to bring the senses into the home like hot baked bread, wonderful chocolate, fabulous linnens and indulgant pieces of furniture, this book is all about living intentionally, and living well through our senses. I would highly recommend this book for anyone looking to add some joy to their life through elements of their home.

4.0 out of 5 stars The pictures are divine..., April 2, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Sensual Home (Hardcover)
And the text makes you think about things that you are probably never going to think about in today's madcap and rushed society, simple things like natural lighting, linen textures, plants for detoxifying your environment, etc. There is just one thing that frustrated me about this book. On pages 54 and 55 there is the most amazing sofa I have ever seen, but there is no mention of where it came from or how to get one like it. Some of the references are clearly European and cannot be found in the States. But the overall philosophy is simple- we are animals and we need to slow down and rediscover our sensual being. And once you have found this simple mindset, you will see ways to make it happen all around you.

I borrowed this book from the library. Then I ordered 3 and then 2 more to send as gifts to the women in my family, neighbors, friends. I'll have to order more...

This book teaches you how to fully enjoy your home as a place of peace and creativity. Bravo Ms.Crawford of England!

The beauty of the cover alone makes this a lovely coffee table book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A simple yet lush and intensely rewarding home decor book, November 17, 2007

This review is from: Sensual Home (Paperback)
I have owned this book for about 3 years now and it by far the most helpful home book I have ever owned. I think this is a book for people that are very aware of their five senses and want a home that is intimate, simple, nurturing and pleasurable. Crawford cover the five senses, examining how to enhance your home experience with fabrics, textures, smells, sights, sounds, tastes and sights. She focuses on using natural materials rather than chemical ones. Cotton, silk, cashmere, natural stone, aromatherapy, flowers, etc. are all discussed. There is a great directory towards the end on what businesses she recommends finding the best, natural materals discussed in the book. I also love that the cover of the book itself is textured. I always ome back to this book for guidance on what I really need in my home to make it a warm, intimate, senual, pared down and happy place.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that makes "sense", December 4, 2009
This review is from: Sensual Home (Paperback)
This book is a treat for the senses! It's a must-have if what you're looking for is insight into opening your senses to your surroundings... The pictures are lush and very well taken. The font is very well designed and easy on the eyes, the overall graphic design is very nice... Everytime I'm looking for inspiration I go back to it...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Guilty Pleasure!, November 29, 2010
By
Justin "Justin Fair" (Baltimore, MD, United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sensual Home (Paperback)
Since I've picked it up, this book been a guilty pleasure of mine and I haven't wanted to put it down! The book features helpful advice, tips, and direction for allowing your lifestyle, body, mind, heart, and home to become healthier and better suited for today's busy world. Not only is there wonderful photography, but the formatting of the book keeps each page unique and interesting, and thrills me to keep reading so I can see what else I'll find.

A nifty feature is that the book is sorted into categories, and in the back there's a database for easy reference that includes tips, where-to for each topic, and even a directory of stores that Crawford recommends. She writes for a hopeful, healthy, hearty audience that wants to blend both natural elements into the home as well as contemporary elements. My only bugger about the book is that while she recommends less technology so that the reader can rediscover natural elements and blend the two together, the book is obviously dated as 1998, as technology has jumped in form and popularity. I would enjoy seeing a new version of this book, very much so. If you're looking for a great read, great imagery, and great ideas that you may not have thought up before, Crawford writes to excite your mental, physical, and spiritual self by accenting just how primal, carnal, sensual, and beautiful our senses really are. Never give up the search for comfort and happiness!
