The most intriguing book I have ever read before.,
By
This review is from: Sensual Phrase (Kaikan Phrase) Vol.1 (Paperback)
I recently discovered this manga by accident, and when I read the story, I was intrigued, and decided to buy it. I could not put this book down and I loved every part of it. It is about a female poet/lyricist who meets the male lead singer of a popular band when he almost runs her over. After seeing a work of hers, he wants her to be the band's lyricist. Her lyrics are erotic and sexual, and when she meets this guy, she falls in love with him and wants to be with him, but her virginity is what gives her the creativity the band needs. And if that weren't bad enough, she is picked on and made fun of for her connection with the band by nearly everyone. When it comes to manga, or any kind of book for that matter, this is exactly the kind that I look for. The artwork is beautiful, the characters are understandable (I have noticed many similarities between Aine and myself) and the romance and story is special as well.

Sexy, Smokin' Manga!,
By Kaikane "Shoujo Addict" (Los Angeles, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sensual Phrase (Kaikan Phrase) Vol.1 (Paperback)
This is an awesome manga! very different from the usual Shoujo manga out there!I was expecting the typical shoujo manga the typical boy-girl fall in love story, I am used to reading the typical PG13 ones...but whoa! This one is a sexy, sexy read! This manga is more suitable for older teens/ young adults. First of all, it's about a high school girl ( Aine) who loves to write sensual lyrics who accidentally met a famous singer/ front man for a band "Lucifer" named Sakuya. Sakuya accidentally found the lyrics that she wrote, made it into the song & was convinced of her raw talent. Despite everyone's objection, the Lucifer front man decides to hire the school girl as their official lyric writer! The lyrics presented in the manga are poetic, sexy, sensual...it comes from the imagination of this inexperienced, virginal, school girl. To get Aine inspired Sakuya constantly seduce Aine's senses to coax sexy lyrics out of her imagination. It's obvious that both of them are deeply attracted to each other, they have this unexplainable chemistry. But he is a rock star with many fans, his manager & band mates seems to discourage their relationship. She is an ordinary school girl, who actually gets bullied by his fans for being close to him. I can't wait for the 2nd volume to come out! & read this sexy love story!!! How this story will develop! I highly recommend this book to all adult, shoujo fans!

Four Stars...But Not Because of Aine,

Sensual Phrase is visual eye candy. Sakuya, the lead singer for the band Lucifer, is that sexy bishonen male who is simply drool-worthy - in fact the entire band is worthy of its own poster (they're all that hot). He's a tribute to all the brooding, devil-may-care rock stars that those of us who grew up in the 60's, 70's and 80's still miss. The sensuality is tastefully drawn, though it is certainly a mature read.
Aine, however, is the reason why manga has lost a great deal of its appeal for me. Maybe it's a culture thing, but I'm simply not interested in the cute but virginal girl who just needs the love of a handsome man to make her complete. Yawn. I don't even like that type of scenario in romance novels. Aine is simply no match for the sensual and seductive Sakuya. She's a ditzy high school girl who just so happens to write rather salacious lyrics, even though she's never been kissed and is still a virgin. She nearly gets run over by the fast-driving Sakuya and from there her rather placid high school life becomes a walk on the wild side of rock stardom. Also, it's just a little maddening that every time Aine's more jealous peers who are huge fans of Lucifer (and of Sakuya) start bullying her, here comes Sakuya to save her hide. Now, perhaps it is her very innocence in a jaded music industry that Sakuya craves, and in that sense, the story works. But again, it's the art that appeals to me. I'll keep collecting each volume and hopefully Aine will grow some sort of backbone. It would be such a disappointment if she stayed the same.

Great for fans of romance manga!,
By Amber (Georgia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sensual Phrase (Kaikan Phrase) Vol.1 (Paperback)
I am a lover of the dramatic, and the romantic. Comedy is okay, but I prefer the type of stuff that makes you cry, either with sympathy and heartache or with joy. This is one that has you cheering at the end.
The characters are very real, believable, and most importantly, likable. The mature content is done in a tasteful, fun way, and the interactions of the characters are great. Aine and Sakuya are perfect together, and although the story moves kind of fast, it is written in such a way as to be totally believable. When they end up together at the end of the first book, there is nothing odd about it, because the way the story was handled makes it entirely plausible. And you are not drowning in sap and waff. The art of this series is amazing! It is so detailed, and so pretty--I just can't stop looking at it. So. Visually pleasing, great characters, terrific storyline... what are you waiting for?

A more adult storyline - I love it,

I just started reading manga again after a long break, and the synopsis for this story caught my interest - I've always had a soft spot for stories about rock musicians and the girls who love them. Once I tracked down a copy I was not disappointed. Sakuya, the lead singer, is the epitome of a moody rock star, and totally hot. Aine at first seems to be a typical innocent schoolgirl heroine - but first impressions are deceptive here. I'm looking forward to the next volumes, and I have recommended this series to several friends and my sister, none of whom read manga, but they all like a romance with hot guys and a few twists and turns along the way.

It's a great romance novel. Love the art work too. Will you have this on DVD? I sure hope so. Get this book women!! its like if we was with our first love.... Almost! But just better inside this book. Ireally cant put it in words but its great......

Well, The Art is Good!,

I heard that this thing was a "straight version of GRAVITATION". Well, both manga are set in the musical industry, and they have a long list of superficial similarities that are fun to make note of. Otherwise it is a misleading comparison. If the phrase "a straight version of GRAVITATION" intrigues you, give this a miss and try SKIP BEAT instead.
I read SENSUAL PHRASE because I heard some good things about it. I have belatedly realized that the good things that I heard probably referred to KAIKAN PHRASE - the anime LOOSELY based upon this manga. SENSUAL PHRASE reminds me of PARADISE KISS in that they have the same basic plot setup: High school girl gets involved with glamorous industry and enigmatic hottie. The difference is that SENSUAL PHRASE 1) adds lots of sex and misogyny, and 2) removes all the humor, character development, non-sexual relationships, and the heroine's backbone and frontal lobe. The SP heroine, Aine, more strongly resembles the whiny heroines of CERES and FUSHIGI YUUGI, only without any pesky friends or brothers or world-saving duties to distract her from her boyfriend. For the first couple of volumes, it appears that SENSUAL PHRASE does have a plot at least, whatever else it is lacking. Later volumes come close to being soft porn, with paper-thin plots that are best recommended to fans of kitschy badness. If this was a TV show and I had friends over for drinks, I would definitely turn it on so that we could mock it and throw things at the TV in between conversations about other things. It is fun in that way.

The sexiest Shoujo I've ever read.,
By
This review is from: Sensual Phrase (Kaikan Phrase) Vol.1 (Paperback)
And I've read quite a bit, not just the stuff released here, but I've read MANY scanslated mangas(Mangas scanned and translated by fans, its legal while the manga isn't liscenced here. :D) as well. I've read manga that tries pretty hard to be all sexy and what-not, and while pretty good, it just isn't successful in that area. I myself AM a conservative Christian, and generally I don't like things with sex in it, I wont read it, or I'll skip over those parts. But this volume didn't have any actual sex, it did have a little nudity, but it wasn't overdone, and it was tasteful. And its no loss if you cover it. ;P Anyways, part of the reason this manga works so well is because of Sakuya, he is just so freakin' hot!!! My brother even thought so, and he is totally straight. HAHA Its really something when you can get a regular ol' guy to admit something like that. I've read it twice, and I think I liked it EVEN MORE the second time. Aine at first, seems like a weak character, but she is the perfect balance for Sakuya. Her innocence and his experience is what makes this manga so sexy. This is DEFINITELY every girls fantasy, you know, meet a famous rockstar and have him not only fall in love with you, but make you his lyricist.! HECK YA!!! So anyways, if you're looking for a break from the typical & tame girly shoujo manga, I HIGHLY recomend Sensual(Kaiken) Phrase to you. Reccomend for "older" teens and young adults. God Bless & *enjoy* (...)

A totally new comic !!,
By Gwenn Cosmis "cardcaptor moon" (the planet cosmos) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sensual Phrase (Kaikan Phrase) Vol.1 (Paperback)
I've never read any comic like Sensual Phrase before. The artist did something totally extraordinary with it.
Description Aine Yukimura enters a contest to write lyrics for the popular band Lucifer. Unfortunately, while Aine is chasing down her lyrics she almost gets hit by a car!! And the driver is none other than Sakuya, Lucifer's singer. He takes Aine's lyrics and uses them in their concert!!! Because of that, he decides that Aine should be their lyricist, and she does. Even though I highly recommend this book, it is rated M for mature. It goes past the OT mark, so if you are 13 and up {depending on your parents}, you can probely read this book.
