5.0 out of 5 stars Whoa!, April 5, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Sensuous Man (Audio CD)
Oh man. Oh baby. Uh-oh. Wow. Whoa!

Remember how Hitler wanted to be an artist? Well, imagine if Hitler grew up listening to the Sex Pistols and elevator music and lounge lizards and hip-hop and be-bop and decided he wanted to be a recording star. However, as a poor starving little Furher guy, he couldn't afford to hire a band, so he bought a crappy little guitar at K-Mart, and a microrecorder, and some cheapo synthesizer drum beat thingy -- and then he made The Sensuous Man.

That's what you got here. But remember, since this little Hitler dude grew up in the 1970s, he was not the pure evil Fuhrer of legend. He was a postmodern ironic referencing kind of dictator type. So when he sings "Jew like you," it's not out of hate, because then he follows it up with tunes like "I'm the White Nigger" and "Hitler Was a Black Man."

Do you get where I'm goin with it?

This is REAL multiculturalism. In other words, everybody's included -- in Mr. Swenson's DERISION. In Mr. Swenson's PASSION. In his god-darned MUSIC.

FOR EXAMPLE. When he sings "Jesus Bend Me Over" he reaches a new height of political correctness -- he's saying that gay guys can love the lord, too. He's saying it's ok to be gay for Jesus. I mean, why you think the Man had twelve other GUYS following him around all the time? They were like proto-christian fag hags or somethin'.

You get it? You better get it. Cause this is one disk that's worth getting. So get down. Get up. Get happy. Get the Sensuous Man.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nasty! Nice!, March 29, 2001

"the sensuous man" Sounds like it was recorded on forty tracks of digitally demented dictaphone - And that's a good thing! Twisted, twisted, twisted songs that dare you to like them... and you will. Just don't sing them out loud in your office. Strictly for under the covers with a flashlight. Nasty! Nice!

5.0 out of 5 stars Elegant and Erect, July 5, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Sensuous Man (Audio CD)
First, the actual title of this record is "The Sensuous Man." Amazon's dbase is wrong.

Second, this is probably one of the most "outside" records ever released. In the post 9/11 world, it is probably one of the most poignant and relevant CDs produced, despite what the politicos will tell you. As reviews in other forums have stated, Mr. Swenson breaks more barriers than his progenitors and collaborators ever have or ever will. Swenson has worked with Momus, Genesis P-Orridge, Richard Kern, Milky, Gillian McCain, Supervert, Necro Enema Amalgamated, Tanya 2.0...just to name a few. Yet he remains forever in the shadows, developing sonics that shame the average pop record producers to no end. Wesley Willis, if he wasn't dead, would worship this guy. Outside artists would slit their wrists they way they should if they KNEW about this guy (those frauds!) So THEY hunt for him at night. They stalk him at his office. They try to send him girls, jokes, underwear and lies. Yet the Swede rebukes them. And retires to dirty scat bars to sing country rock tunes. And then, after his thousandth rendition of "Renegade" by Styx on a triangle and fuzzbox, he announces the release of something as slick and danceworthy as "Acne Girl" or "Hitler Was a Black Man." And then, THEY try to fire him. They put him in a box. They threaten him with more lies, coercion and media blackmail. Politics. They threaten to revoke his healthcare months before his baby is born. So he writes about it and sings about it in a code that ruffles more feathers than Howard Stern ever has or ever will. And still, THEY do their best to keep THEIR enemy close. But the artist always wins.

Rock and roll, they say, is dead, ever since Kajagoogoo broke the sound barrier with "Oooh to be ah" but the Swensonic has done more for rock than GG Allin because Swenson drinks wheat grass juice which he promptly drains into the mouths of false prophets everywhere. And he keeps notes. And he sings. Oh, does he sing!

A total dance hit!
