More About the Author

After scoring an 800 Verbal in high school, Erica Meltzer assumed she was done with the SAT for good. That changed in 2007, when she answered a Craigslist ad for an SAT tutor and inadvertently found herself in the high-pressure world of Manhattan test prep. Concerned by the lack of accurate, high-quality commercial SAT prep material, she began writing her own. Her first book, "The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar," has been widely praised as the most effective source of SAT grammar preparation and is currently used by tutoring companies across the United States.

A native of Brookline, Massachusetts and a graduate of Brookline High School (where she was required to memorize Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style" as a freshman), she holds a B.A. from Wellesley College and has also studied at Harvard, Columbia, and the Sorbonne. She lives and works in New York City, and you can visit her website at http://www.thecriticalreader.com.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Vince Kotchian on January 19, 2014
Format: Paperback
As a veteran SAT tutor, I've seen firsthand that one of the most intimidating aspects of the SAT, for many, is the difficulty level of the vocabulary present in its sentence completion questions. But learning or even memorizing all the words the SAT may test is an unachievable task, and making a noticeable improvement in one's vocabulary can take a long time.

The bad news? Most students do need to learn many new vocabulary words and word roots - and there is no shortcut for doing so. The good news? Good technique and high-quality practice material goes a long way. That's where this book comes in.

- there's an authoritative explanation of sentence completion technique
- the author debunks the dangerous myth that sent. comp. is just about vocab and explains how even students with superior vocabulary skills can and do miss questions
- the practice questions are very SAT-like and consequently much better for practice than nearly any book I've encountered
- the answer explanations are articulate and thorough
- the list of common second meanings of words is very useful

The book's no-nonsense tone and rigorously explained questions are a welcome change from the flash and lack of substance of books written by bigger SAT-prep companies. This clearly is the labor of someone invested in improving SAT scores. Highly recommended for self-studying students of any level.

Great strategies, plus need to know words, suffixes and prefixes are divided into easy learn groups. This book was key for motivating my son to memorize vocabulary words. Ms. Meltzer made it doable! (Bix boxes of vocab cards and long word lists were overwhelming!) Very grateful for the book --
