Editorial Reviews

Southern Lord is proud to unleash the second album from Seattle s barbaric wrecking crew that is Black Breath! Sentenced to Life is the highly-anticipated follow up to the band s raging 2010 debut album, Heaving Breathing. The new album projects an even more vile, metallic sonic attack than it s predecessor....with a bit less rock and roll swagger and more full-on crushing death metal rage. This is a product of furious creativity jammed into a short span of time, written in the seemingly endless Winter after returning from their November 2010 European tour. Bearing 10 thunderous tracks in just under 33 minutes, Sentenced to Life, features such smashing Black Breath hits as Feast of the Damned, Doomed, Forced Into Possession, Home of the Grave and of course the title anthem, Sentenced to Life. The band once again recorded at God City Studios with Kurt Ballou and had the finished product mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side. Easily the band s most thunderous recording to date, Black Breath sentence every listener to a life of headbanging after spinning this one!

This band has gone from greatness on Heavy Breathing to rarified air with this release. It's pretty incredible the progression they make with each new effort and Sentenced to life should finally get them the attention they deserve. For the uninitiated they are a Seattle based band who, to my ears anyway, blend Thrash, Speed Metal and Punk so seemlessly that it feels like a genre all to its own. Slayer, Minor Threat and Black Sabbath always seem to be the bands I most associate Black Breath with though I would never say they are a copy of any one of those, this is just to give you an idea.

I purchased the vinyl copy so I will give you the basic facts not listed above. It's not pressed on 180G and there does not appear to be one available on their record company's website. The vinyl sounds extremely clean, no pops, snaps, etc. It's housed in a thick cardboard, non gatefold, sleave and has a heavyweight paper inner sleeve with lyrics, production notes and a few live shots of the band on one side and a duplicate of the outer front cover on the other.

On a final note, the production by Black Breath and Kurt Ballou is outstanding. They capture the density of their sound yet it comes across crisp and clear with defined seperation among all the instruments, nothing gets drowned out. They are also, thankfully, not victims of the loudness war. Standout tracks for me so far are the opener Feast Of The Damned, Forced Into Possession, Endless Corpse and Mother Abyss.

Loved heavy breathing, and this album is even better. Really impressed. Top notch entombed sounding guitars, but an even fuller mix on this album than last one. Buy this and be crushed

Great album by a really good band. I think Slayer, punk & other classic thrash bands mixed together to create a sound that is both familiar and fresh. I recommend.

Its great to hear them drop a lot of the hardcore sound that was holding them back on the debut.. Now the unholy death metal can flow. This is their Entombed Left Hand Path where Heavy Breathing was like the Nihilist demos. They finally have reached their technical peak. Catchy riffs pummeling drums this is what old school death metal is all about. The uprising in the past couple years is slowly infecting bands all over the world. I confused my friend with this album, I lied to him and said it was a new Dismember side project and he believed me. THE CONS IMO.... I still dont like this guys "metal core" shouty vocals. I feel a deep growler/guttural shout (GRAVE, Nirvana2002, Carnage) would suit their sound better. Oh well I guess that is what sets them apart from the rest... Its nice they didnt loose all aspects of their hardcore heritage. I feel that if more people see where they are REALLY coming from with this that are unfamiliar with SWEDISH death metal they will find a whole new world of brutality. Perfect album to put in a playlist with Furbowl or God Macabre! PUNK MEETS DEATH IN 2012 once again \m/ I feel Southern Lord are really starting to improve on their image with this!
