This is a truly abominable translation (i.e. the OXFORD edition tr. by Parmee). It is awkward, inaccurate and full of inappropriate Briticisms. The new Wall revision of the Baldick translation (Penguin) is not much better, also full of Briticisms and anachronistic colloquialisms. Why do they do this? It borders on racist jingoism. I once read a British review of a translation of MADAME BOVARY which complained that it still retained "a whiff of French" about it. What could possibly be more repugnant when reading Flaubert?

I recommend the Signet edition translated by Perdita Burlingame. It is unfortunately out of print. This masterpiece is in desperate need of a respectful and readable translation. Signet should at the very least reprint their edition.

Postscript 6/19/12 - The Signet edition of the Burlingame translation appears to be unavailable. It was reprinted as a "Meridian Classic" which IS available used on Amazon. It was also issued at one point as a poor quality hardcover by the International Collectors Library. This can also be obtained used.

Also, here is an e-mail exchange with Viking/Penguin which now owns Signet -

Has Penguin considered reprinting the translation of Flaubert's SENTIMENTAL EDUCATION done by Perdita Burlingame for Signet books? It is usually considered the best English translation and is free of the Briticisms so jarring to American readers while reading a work of French literature.

Flaubert's great 'A Sentimental Education' is one of the great achievements of literary realism. Less stifling perhaps than 'Madame Bovary,' this fine novel portrays the immensely rich and entertaining world of Frederic, the young dilettante and aesthete who falls for the much older and unobtainable Madame Arnoux. Of course this novel is about the complexity of 19th century French society, about the rise of the bourgeoisie, about the revolution. But we read it for its complex and highly refined characters, and its crisp filmic realism. Like Tolstoy, Flaubert was a genius for capturing the smallest details with creativity and color. Who can forget Flaubert's clouds that look like the tips of ostrich feathers? This is a truly timeless masterpiece- a rare totality that combines bold storytelling with delicate grace.

This translation (Parmee)is terrible. Here is Flaubert, working tirelessly over every line to find le mot juste, and I can't read a single page without flinching from some awkwardly translated phrase.
