This review is from: Sentimiento (Audio CD)
At the turn of the 21st Century, I couldn't get enough of the Buena Vista Social Club musicians. I bought seemingly every spinoff disc I could by the various participants, including several titles by one of the greatest ever Cuban female vocalists, Omara Portuondo. This year's gloriously warm Maine summer has gotten my tropical blood boiling once again, so I recently ordered several collections from the Cuban Essentials series on the Escondida label, especially when I saw how inexpensively they were selling from vendors in the Marketplace. "Sentimiento" culls a variety of Omara's performances from the 70s, 80s and 90s. The disc is front-loaded with some gorgeous ballads and great up-tempo grooves, but unfortunately the last three tracks are terrible. Bad Kenny G style sax solos, Zamfir-esque flute, cheesy pop keyboards, and lackluster string accompaniment make the end of this CD sound like Buena Vista Disney and not Buena Vista Social Club. Overall "Sentimiento" is a good greatest hits effort, but the offerings by Ibrahim Ferrer, Ay, Candela, and Compay Segundo, Compadre Again (see my review), are the place to start for Cuban Essentials.
