This book not only documents the wealth of petroglyphs to be found in Los Alamos, but its authors provided sufficient documentation to have White Rock Canyon of the Rio Grande entered in the National Register of Historic Places.

This review is from: Sentinels on Stone: The Petroglyphs of Los Alamos (Paperback)
Los Alamos County in New Mexico is not the friendliest of landscapes because it's full of inhospitable but beautiful rocky cliffs, canyons, isolated meadows and a burning heat in summer and frigid ice and snow in winter. Yet the region contains hundreds of messages from the past -- in stone. Petroglyphs left by the Tewa-speaking Pueblo Indians. Betty Lilienthal and Dorothy Hoard, both long-time residents of the County spent nine years exploring, photographing, drawing and cataloging the vast array of images, some very elementary and perhaps childish, others complicated and expertly designed. For instance depictions of humans are mostly boxy, while others such as flute players are lively and well presented. Then there are the multi-ringed spirals which by their very detail must have demanded considerable artistic skills. The authors wisely resist any attempt to rationalize or offer opinions. They leave this to the reader and the student. It is little wonder their documentation was the passport to having White Rock Canyon of the Rio Grande entered in the National Register of Historic Places. A task well done. The joy for the reader of "The Petroglyphs of Los Alamos: Sentinels of Stone" is to mull over and perhaps meditate on what messages the Native Ancestors were trying to say. A book to be treasured.
