Customer Reviews

This product does not work for ticks or fleas.

Three weeks after his first application I applied the second dose since the product said that it lasts up to 4 weeks but could be reapplied every two.

Smell is very strong, and leaves a horrible oil streak.

I'll note 3 things:

1)The smell is quite intense at 1st. I recommend putting in on outside and taking the dog for a walk. Past the initial smell it's really quite pleasant, and my wife started to call our dog "our mobile room freshener".

2)The ugly truth is it left a yellow stripe down my dalmatian mix's back. If your dog is white it will leave a yellow stain. With later applications I did find I could apply it to his spots, but he is nearly spotless, and his few spots aren't large. Plus these stains remained for months. (It should be noted that pesticide based treatments will also stain him for shorter periods of time.)

3)It seems to work well he doesn't have fleas, or ticks. Plus the smell is rather pleasant.

All and all if it didn't make my dog look like he had been urinated on this would be 4-5 stars.

PS- I've noticed staining with the spray version as well. I don't think staining would be an issue for a dog that aren't pure white.

Edit-
We have a 2nd dog who is black and the stuff doesn't stain it. #2 isn't scared of water over 2 inches and the stuff doesn't survive well in a rain storm or creeks....

I've used this soley on our Siberian Huskies since last spring, we have only had one single flea since November of 2008 and that was when we were using Frontline Plus. My dogs seem to have no problems with the other pesticide laden topicals however I break out if I even touch them within 2 weeks of applying them. That isn't something I can live with. I have no problem with the smell, honestly I like it. One of our Huskies is mainly white with a small amount of grey and I have seen no noticeable staining of her coat, she has even competed in shows within 3 days of an application. If your animal gets greasy, you are probably applying too much in one place. I usually make three strips of it down their backs one in the center and then one each side of it about an inch away from the first. I apply it at night before they go to bed in their crates, the next morning I use a bristle brush to help work any remaining oil into their coats as I've said above I have shown dogs within 3 days of an application. If you are careful, you won't see oiliness.
For those of you who have pets with serious infestations, this is not going to help at all if you do not treat your house and yard! Even if you use topicals with pesticides without treating the environment the dog will again get covered in fleas. Vacuum everyday, wash their beds and if your dog has a lot of fury stuffed toys wash them as well. Use food grade diatomaceous earth in your yard.
Like ANY product applied to the skin and coat there is the potential for a reaction when it is applied on a sensitive animal. If you have common sense do a spot test before applying the entire tube! IF your pet is having a bad reaction, use Dawn dish soap to remove the oils and wash them off.

Thank goodness for Natural Defense. We have been struggling with the other poisonous options on our two shih-tzus. Poor Henry was having terrible & frightening reactions to them. With Natural Defense, the dogs have no reaction when we apply it, and we've not had fleas or ticks -- and this is the second month we've used it.

Only minor downside is the strong smell for the first few days after application. It's not a bad smell -- just spicy. My husband says it smells like "Christmas." Well, Christmas on over-drive.

I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a natural alternative to the chemical repellents.

We've used this product for over 6 years now, and have NEVER had a flea or tick to remove from any of our 3 dogs. Our dogs aren't city dogs or even your average suburb dogs. They are at the dog park almost every day (which is mostly woods/brush) and spend hours each week hiking through the woods, waist high grass and marshy areas on the deer trails. It helps repel mosquitoes and gnats, too. I like the fact that my dogs aren't absorbing pesticides, or rubbing them all over my family and house, but yet still getting all the protection. The only thing I don't love is is the yellowing on my white dog. It does leave a noticeable trail on her, but she also has a very short thin coat. The other two have denser coats and it's undetectable after the first day. For the pesticide and chemical free protection it gives, we can put up with a yellow striped back!

I recently bought the under 15 pounds variety to try on my small toy poodles. I had been an avid user of the more expensive, vet supplied topical solutions for years. I wanted to try this because it is all natural and my smaller dogs which are all under 6 pounds can sometimes have bad reactions to chemicals, vaccinations, etc.
I had read both good and bad reviews and even some who stated that their dogs lost clumps and clumps of hair, etc.

Cons:
VERY strong odor for the first day. It is almost over powering. Very spicy type of scent.
My cream poodle stud now has a yellow streak along his back.
Product leaves your pets a little greasy for the first 12 hours or so but seems to be dry after that.

Pros:
All natural
No fleas found on any of the 3 that I tested this on within 24 hours!
They all seem to have a clean, faint spicy smell to them (Strong when first applied)
Lasts approximately 3 weeks before needing to be reapplied (says up to 4 weeks, 3 weeks is pretty good)
Costs one third the price of the more expensive vet supplied brands.

I by no means have a flea or tick problem here at my house. We get the occasional flea from time to time, but being a breeder I need to take action when they are first spotted. I do not need puppies to get overrun with fleas.

All in all, I like this product and would suggest it to others.
