5.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy, reliable, simple to use
We have used this safe for years, moving it from place to place, and opening and closing it many, many times. It is very sturdy. It looks and works the same as when it was new. We like the simplicity of the lock and key. This, too, is just as it was when it was new. It closes tightly and opens easily, once the key is turned. The handle is sturdy, too, and although we've...

3.0 out of 5 stars good for an apartment, but not great
I'm in my mid 20's and in grad school. I wanted something that would keep my valuable paperwork safe and secure. For the most part I am happy with this fire safe, the latch seems secure and the entire thing does seem to be sturdy. Its made of a very hard plastic, which is fine with me, and the locking mechanism and face is metal. The only thing I don't like is that it...

The only thing I don't like is that it isn't water proof and thus the lid lifts up just a hair, enough that if submerged in water the contents would definitely get wet. That being said, from what I've read from the manufacturer the case will seal itself in the event of a fire. So, if you are looking for something to keep sensitive paperwork (social, birth certificate, insurance, etc.) safe from fire or theft, I think this is a good buy for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sentry Safe, July 14, 2010

Has the features I wanted--we live in hurricane country--I wanted something that I could store some valuables in that I could quickly pick up and take with me if we needed to evacuate but in case I couldn't leave something that would give them some protection. Hope I don't have to test it--also I picked this one because it had a handle--easier to carry.

I first purchased the SentrySafe 500 FIRE-SAFE Box, 0.15 Cubic Feet, Black but it came with the lock mechanism incomplete due to an apparent manufacturing error. Sent it back promptly after determining I couldn't seure the lock to the safe myself. That turned out to be the best move I could have made, because this fire safe is superior. The locking mechanism, while not intended to keep criminals out, is much sturdier that the design in the model I returned.
I inserted my documents in doubled-up gallon freezer bags, and put a rechargeable silica gel pack inside the bags to prevent moisture problems, and I am quite satisfied. I don't know how well it will really hold up in a fire, but I hope not to find out. For me, it keeps prying eyes away from some personal papers and keeps some emergency cash relatively safe from any sticky fingers that might happen by.

5.0 out of 5 stars FAST shipping, solid unit, September 21, 2011

This is my second of these.... the first one didn't burn, I just gave it to my mom ;)

This thing feels solid, as you would expect, but what sorta struck me was something random: the key turns really nicely in the lock lol.... well, at least compared with some busted one someone gave me awhile ago, the action on the latch is great ;)

I've been putting hard drive back ups in this box, cash, birth cert, car title... If you get one of those little backup drives for 50-70$, it'd be fairly easy to have an "offsite" backup onsite... I can't put this to the test because I hope never to experience a housefire.

You might consider putting some of your stuff in a plastic bag... I used a vacuum seal bag... but it really depends on how these things heat up when the fire comes on... I used the plastic bag because what if I flood as well and water seeps into the box somehow? Don't know.... I figure the vacuum seal bags are made to melt flat...but that could be crazy...

Well, if I ever get another one of these, I'll do a submerge test for you folks even though this is really just for fire.

It's not really a security box although I really haven't tried picking or breaking the lock... as I said it feels nice and smooth but it might be easy to crack into for all I know. And really since the main purpose of this is fire protection, if everything else burns, you may have a hard time finding your key unless you plan ahead!

To this end, recommend you give the spare key (they give you two) to a friend/family-member or storing it in a lockbox or somewhere offsite.

5.0 out of 5 stars SMALL BUT GOOD, AND BRIGHT :), November 8, 2010

This review is from: SentrySafe 1100 0.18-Cubic Feet 1/2-Hour Fire-Safe Chest, Arctic Blue (Tools & Home Improvement)
Excellent purchase. Arrived on time and is the right size for smaller valuables which it is being used for. I read some complaints about not being able to fit full size files, however that is not what this is designed for...

It works great! It has a lock that locks, a hinged lid that opens and closes with ease, and a handle so you can carry it around or use it as a melee weapon. I haven't tested it's fire proofness but you never know I might get bored one day.

This safe is extremely well built and easy to use. This product, however, is not ideal if you are trying to lock up and secure items the key for these safes are the same key that have been used for years. My key from a similar SentrySafe that I bought over 4 years ago operates this one as well. If you are looking only to protect items from damage/fire only then this is a great option.

This little safe works great for what I need it for. I keep my personal documents in it as well as a large autographed book and a few smaller things. This would probably be very easy to crack into if a burglar was dedicated to doing so but for it's not made for keeping burglars out, only fire for a short time. I haven't had a fire so it hasn't actually been tested but it would probably do fine in a small house fire and would probably protect whatever you put in it. I advise double bagging everything into zip-lock bags to protect it from any leakage from either water or the material inside the safe in case something actually does happen. All in all a nice little safe that works for the small amount of stuff I need it for.

I read the reviews before purchasing this safe so I knew it was small and not gonna stop someone who really wanted in. After weighing pros and cons I went ahead and got it. It won't hold a full size piece of paper without being folded which is fine by me. I keep some flash drives, my son's bracelets from the NICU, birth certificates, etc in it.
A few weeks ago we had tornados come through the area and I was so glad I bought this safe! Everything important got carried quickly with me into the downstairs bathroom, safe in one hand, my 11 month old in the other. It's heavier than I'd expected but still portable even in a hurry. I just hope I never have to test it's fire efficacy.
I'm very pleased with my purchase.
