I thought I'd offer this general advice for anybody considering buying a fire resistant (not fireproof) safe/chest product.

Some of the products only offer fire protection and not water protection, now consider this, if your home/property did catch fire and you were unable to grab your fire resistant safe, and it was left in the property, you'd be thinking...'that's OK, it's fire resistant'...but then (hopefully) the Fire Dept. turn up...and what do they do? They soak your property with water, and your safe is only 'fire resistant' not 'water resistant'.

My advice - go for one that is also water resistant, as where there is fire, hopefully water will soon follow!

Options, paying close attention to 1 and 2

1) A fireproof safe that is made waterproof because the heat of a fire will melt a seal, thus making it waterproof

2) A water and fireproof safe that is waterproof without the need for heat/fire, as commented on, waterproof safes come with their own problems, condensation etc

3) A fireproof safe that is only fireproof, does not have the capability of melting a seal, thus is not waterproof

4) A waterproof safe that is only waterproof

The 1170 is just what I needed to keep some important documents in a fire resistant safe. The lock may not be that sturdy but if you lock the safe and you have a break-in, they will either break the lock or take the safe. So, my advice, don't lock it unless you have to have it locked for a reason. The size is big enough to hang some hanging files and a bunch of documents. I am glad I used Amazon for this purchase since they allowed me free shipping. This safe is pretty heavy (31 lbs) and the shipping would have been expensive. The safe is also very sturdy and seems well built. I read that there may be an issue with moisture building up in the safe and the manufacturer recommended using a desicant. Although the desicant must be changed periodically. Someone recommened that I wrap the documents in foil to ward off any moisture. And, you should know; the safe is "fire resistant" not "fire-proof" see manufacturers specs. If you call the Sentry Safe folks they are very helpful. Hope this helps your decision.

Purchased this more for fire protection then anything else. Nice size inside & out. The hanging folders are a nice touch. Durable & well built. Able to move around without a lot of hassle. As to theft proof, the lock is sturdy enough to deter most intruders. Definitely recommended.

I ordered this safe because it said it was safe for CD's and DVD's. When it arrived, I did not even open the box. On the outside of the box, the very first line said it was NOT TO BE USED FOR THE STORAGE OF CD'S OR DVD'S! For such items, the box said to look at Sentry fire safe media products. I immediately contacted Amazon, and to them I would give 5 stars. I got prompt satisfaction from them for this item's return. (Gave it back to UPS the next day, free shipping.) And they arranged for my credit just as fast. I could not be happier with Amazon's service. However, I encouraged them to change the description on this web page so no one else is deceived as I was. Hopefully that is done soon, but I am writing this review just in case. I am now searching once again for a fire safe box for my CD's, and am a little hesitant to make a purchase based on the web page information.

I've owned my SentrySafe 1170 for over a decade now. This is a good safe for its intended purpose, but it is important that you know exactly what that purpose is (and isn't) before investing in this product.

The 1170 is designed to store documents, and it does this well. It is spacious enough to hold all of your most vital documents. There are a pair of ridges on the inside that comfortably hold the end-hooks of normal hanging file-folders. The unit is pretty heavy (about 30 lbs.). The walls are extremely thick, and so is the lid. The locking mechanism work well; I've never noticed snags or any other mechanical issues with the lock, and I've never needed to use any lubricant in the lock.

Very fortunately, I cannot attest to durability during a fire. I can only assume that the solid body is a good reflection of its 1/2 hour fire rating.

If you are looking at buying this safe you need to take inventory of what you want. As a "fire safe" this will presumably give your documents some level of protection against fire. First, I do not believe that this safe is water-tight, or is even water rated. I looked on the website and there is no mention of water that I could see. This is important if there is a chance that the storage area may flood, or in the event that it is soaked by firefighters. If your documents could get ruined in such an event, you may want to consider a safe that is water rated as well.

Most importantly, as a "fire safe" this safe is not designed to protect against people. Yes, there is a lock on the front, but think of this more as a latch that will keep the lid secure and not a mechanism that would keep an adult out. My wife and I each kept a key for the safe, and during a recent move we both misplaced our only copies.
