Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The SentrySafe fire-safe waterproof security file is a great item to secure documents in your house or office. The H4300 model is UL classified with 1/2-hour proven fire protection and ETL verified 1/2 hour fire protection for CDs, DVDs, USB drivers, and memory sticks up to 1550 degrees F. It is also ETL verified waterproof. Comes with a tubular key lock.
Note: The keys are inside the security file. You need to put the file on a floor or at knee level on a hard surface. With the palm on the lines/ridges on the black handle, we need to put constant pressure down on the lid and with the fingers, pinch the red long “button” up. This will open the file. Sometimes the water gasket seals create it a little harder to open but with use, this relieves it.

Before purchasing this product, I would have liked to have known that due to the "patented insulation that has a high moisture content," it is recommend that photos (and some other items) "be put in an air-tight container, prior to placing them in the product for storage."

I have a number of Sentry Safes, they are fireproof for a length of time and this is the first one I've bought that is also waterproof, another nice feature. Their locks are make for locking, they're not real tamperproof, as I found when I lost the keys for my 1170 model and we were able to pick the lock within several minutes.

In case you happen to have an 1170, this one opens a bit differently. With the 1170, you put the key in, turn it and can pick up the lid. With the H4300SG, after you unlock it, you have to press down on the lid while gripping and pulling up the lid at the same time. This probably serves the purpose whereas if the safe is unlocked and knocked over, the lid won't flop pen and possibly let items fall out. If you deal with something like bad arthritis in your hands, you might find opening the H4300SG a bit difficult.

The Sentry safes do serve their purpose at a reasonable price; they don't take the place of a safe deposit box. The one I bought from Amazon was in "used - like new" condition, I saved money on it going this route. The condition was as advertised and I'm happy with the purchase.

This safe clearly states on the inside lid that it is not intended for storage of firearms or medication, as it is not a security safe. It's true purpose is for fire protection, and I bought this safe knowing that was its intent. The safe was quite big and easily fits 8x11 documents in it without bending. They can be laid flat on the bottom of the safe. I am using this to hold important paperwork such as birth certificates and passports. I believe it will do the job well, and gives me added piece of mind that these documents will be safe even in the event of a fire.
I would highly recommend this product if you need a safe place to store documents. Do not buy it as a "security" safe because that is clearly not its intent.

Great product at a great price and 40 lbs shipped free from Amazon! Pendaflex folders fit perfectly for holding documents of all types. It even holds a three ring binder slightly leaning against the other files. I like the saftey latch system which will prevent the lid from opening if the safe is tipped over, even without being locked.

Timely shipment, good packaging, and was as specified..very solid and sturdy. The enclosed instructions clearly specified how to open it easily (one of review complaints...guess they don't read instructions or the tips in the reviews). My husband tried to open it, and couldn't until I told him the "Press down on lid before lifting it" secret.

Hanging file folders fit perfectly, manila folder tabs also fit exactly right.

Highly recommended for fire/water safety as stipulated. A strong burgler could carry it off...but it was not advertised as a burgler-proof safe. (Again, some reviews complained about this, but obviously they were non-readers or not detail people.

Extremely pleased and would recommend it to friends and family...

Item is pretty much as described. Plenty of room for important papers and computer back up on a small hard drive. Some of the other reviewers complained about how hard it is to open. It is not terribly hard but it can be a little touchy. Over all much cheaper and easier to deal with than a safe.

I can not seem to open this thing on the first try. It says to push down to open it, but it takes many tries before I succeed.

I received this safe as a Christmas gift since it seemed like the best for the money/size/quality I wanted. Sadly I was grossly mistaken.

When I was first taking the safe out of its packaging the top popped open. Once completely out of the packaging, I discovered that the safe had opened from the back hinge instead of the front. I then tried to open it properly from the front (to see if there was any information about how to fix the back); after about 10 minutes and two people trying I finally managed to release the front latch to open the safe. There was nothing inside suggesting method for fixing the hinge.

Looking at the hinge itself, I'm shocked that it's effective at all. The lid is held to the base with two short, thin, plastic nubs (similar to how a toilet paper roll is held into the dispenser, though cheaper plastic). I didn't have enough faith that, if the safe we knocked over in a fire or flood the lid wouldn't fall open to allow damage to the contents so I decided to return this product.
