Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Stephens, an American writer, introduces Korean culture, history, and sociology in the context of his visits to his wife's family in Seoul. He has an engaging style and depicts with respect and humor contemporary Korean society. His most memorable characters include Grandmother Oh, whose life bridges most of the 20th century and whose only remaining "pleasures left in life: smoking, drinking, and cursing" she excels in, and Uncle Mo, who opens the door to Korean low life, including a rowdy visit to a Korean drinking house. Stephens draws from specific persons and incidents to weave a tapestry of the forces of continuity and change in Korea. He provides a useful and insightful introduction to the people of Korea in a highly readable form. A valuable addition to any library.
