4.0 out of 5 stars Contriva - Separate Chambers, April 14, 2011
This review is from: Separate Chambers (Dig) (Audio CD)
Contriva err on the side of dreamy post-rock, and with _Separate Chambers_, they fit into the Morr Music aesthetic perfectly: try anything, and make it work. So the echoing melancholy of "Good to Know" gives way to the more uptempo "Unhelpful." Masha Qrella's timorous voice makes an appearance on "Before," a slight counterpoint to the jangling guitars. The album continues to proceed in a mellow vein, a calming mix of electronic atmosphere and guitar work. Of particular note is "Number Me," which has a certain pep that makes it stand out, and the gentle banjo-like playing and bassoon sampling on "Concrete Sleepers." A quiet and intriguing album.
