Wonderful and interesting collection,
This review is from: Sepharad: Songs of the Spanish Jews in the Mediterranean and the Ottoman Empire (Audio CD)
This is a fascinating collection of music. I bought this cd at a used bookstore out of my personal interests in the musical history of Jews in Europe and abroad and was already familiar with Ivanoff and Ensemble Sarband through other recordings they had made. This disc is quite a neat collection of old songs and pieces from different, primarily pre-17th century, groups of Sephardic Jews living in Spain, Africa, and Bulgaria. The music is excellently performed and the collection is very interesting from a musicological and historical stance. Most of this is not very active music, but it's a very poignant look into the music of Sephardic Jews during the great eras of the middle ages and renaissance to early baroque. This is a collection for anyone familiar or interested in Ladino (Sephardic) music and historical re-productions of works from a previous era and culture.
