On the morning of September 11, 2001, two hijacked airplanes destroyed New York's World Trade Center. Thus began the extraordinary story of a great city coping with the worst disaster in its history. As shock and amazement gave way to grief for the victims and their families, New Yorkers also reached deep inside themselves to discover a sense of civic nobility, exemplified by the heroism of firefighters, the police, and rescue units. Using the images of many superb photographers who covered the city during these dramatic days and the words of prominent New Yorkers, including especially Mayor Giuliani, the editors of New York magazine provide a visual record of the city in the week after the attack. It begins with the event itself and the panic and chaos it caused, and it goes on to chronicle the rescue and excavation efforts by firemen, policemen, and construction workers at Ground Zero and the actions of the city's leaders to maintain morale. It registers a vast emotional upheaval of grief, rage, and patriotism and documents the many memorials created by private citizens, at hospitals, squares, firehouses, and in the streets. The impetus to publish this record of events came about through the joint efforts of Caroline Miller, editor of New York, and Eric Himmel, editor-in-chief of Harry N. Abrams, Inc. Ms. Miller and Mr. Himmel, who are married to one another, felt that their respective companies could join forces to do something to commemorate the tragic attack and raise money for its victims. All proceeds from the sale of this book go to September 11th Fund, created by the United Way and the New York Community Trust to respond to the immediate and longer-term needs of the victims, their families, and the communities affected by the events of September 11. New York magazine, Harry N. Abrams, Inc., and other participants will donate services to create it.

This book is simply a greatly moving album of photographs of the tragic events of September 11 and the rescue efforts from many, many different angles and perspectives. Readers will find shots here, which they have not seen in any other book, documenting the crashes, the mayhem in the rest of the city that day, the rescue and cleanup operations, and the memorials afterward. ONE OF THE BETTER ACCOUNTS OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2001,

With so many books being published on the events of September 11, it is difficult to know which books are worth the money and which ones are not. This book is definitely one that is worth the price tag. New York Magazine has done an excellent job of portraying this devastating time and has put together a well-documented account of the events. The photography is absolutely incredible and surreal; it reveals the shock, fear, panic, grief and feeling of impossibility the images of this horrific day evoke. Just as the boming of Pearl Harbour carries horrific memories, so will the events of September 11th, and these attrocities will forever go down in the pages of history. This book, along with one other, "One Nation" by Life Magazine are both two of the better ones on bookshelves today and would make memorable keepsakes for many years to come. Both are highly recommended and most deserving of a five-star rating.

This book grabs you. I had watched the events take place on television at work, with my coworkers, one could look out the window and see the smoke in the distance. Being a New Yorker everyone I know has either lost someone or knows someone who did. I had seen the book in a store before Christmas, but it was too close to 9/11 to buy it. Since that time it has been sold out everywhere. If you want to see hell on earth in book form this is it. But more importantly, buy it and keep it so that we never forget 9/11/2001 or let it happen again.

Of all the Books this will be the Collector,

There are a lot of Books out right now concerning September 11 but this will be the American collector as more than a History book, it will be the Icon of books for this date. This is an American Book of our account, not the Taliban's or Osama DUMB Laden. I belive more than one hundred years from now people will view this book in America and be happy that we responded with a Touch Down strike of profound proportions against these naive perpetrators. Get a copy and keep it for your childrens children. I want to highly recommend a book that predicted this terrorism and will help us stop the terrorism, Karl Mark Maddox has a super great book called SB 1 or God
