"Big Game James" Shields and Bill Chastain team up to deliver a riveting revival of the Tampa Bay Rays improbable run to the 2010 American League East championship. Even though the reader obviously knows the outcome of the "David vs. Goliath" AL East race between the underdog Rays and the heralded New York Yankees, Shields' perspective from inside the clubhouse allows the reader to experience the tension of the Rays' incredible pennant drive as if it was happening today! At the same time, he brings out the unique chemistry of this unique organization -- from the genius of Andrew Friedman and Joe Maddon to the diverse personalities on the field -- the quirky Matt Garza...the unflappable David Price...the clutch Evan Longoria...the effervescent Carlos Pena...and many, many more. The fact that I read this book in September 2011 -- while the Rays were making yet another impossible run to the playoffs -- magnified the intrigue of the book! Chastain has a history of excellence as an author and MLB.com reporter, and he and Shields have created a must-read for any lover of the game!

Honestly I had higher hopes for this book. But here is my review:

Pros: gives insight into what the players are actually feeling/thinking at certain points throughout the pennant race. The actuals tend t be much different than what is put out by the media. The language makes you feel like you're sitting talking to Shieldsy one on one. I do remember all of the big moments in the games he is reliving and that is pretty cool.

Cons: very redundant at points (Chapter 1 especially). At times you feel like he is just repeating himself to fill pages and it gets old quickly. The language makes you feel like you're sitting talking to Shieldsy one on one - I know I placed this as a Pro HOWEVER the language is a bit annoying at times, many grammatical and spelling mistakes in this book.

Overall I am enjoying it....just know what you are getting.

This is a great read, providing unique insights into the mindset of the pro athlete as the race enters its final, critical 30 days.
Shields delivers a refreshing look at the pressures faced as each game has so much meaning as they battle for the Division title in baseball's toughest Division. These pressures are compounded by the emotions associated with knowing the team as configured in 2010 will change dramatically, as free-agency looms for many of the stars of the team.
Chastain captures the pressures and emotions beautifully, much as he did in "Payne at Pinehurst".

This book written by James Shields illustrates the rise of The Tampa Bay Rays to the top of the AL East , the toughest division in baseball. James Shields was a big part of that. Although he was recently traded to the KC Royals, James Shields will always be a big part of the success of the franchise.
