September Song mixes Jimmy Durante's gravelly voice and the softly dramatic strings so common during Durante's day. The result is pure Durante. If you love his music, you'll know most of these songs, if you're new to Jimmy Durante this is worth a listen.

I love the voice of Jimmy Durante. His somewhat gravelly voice catches my attention every time and it never lets go until the end of his performance! On this CD, which I originally had on vinyl, Jimmy sings twelve wonderful songs that weave a magical spell on the listener and that's grand. The artwork also uses the original front cover artwork from the record album release; and the quality of the sound is excellent.

There's not a bad track in the lot here. "September Song," the title track, features Jimmy squarely front and center--which is right where he belongs! The backup chorus harmonizes nicely; but Jimmy never needed backup; he was a natural all the way. The strings are used to great advantage; and "September Song" whets your appetite for more!

And more is exactly what you're going to get. "Look Ahead Little Girl" charms me every time I hear it; Jimmy sings this passionately with all his heart and soul; and the ballad works on every level. I love it! "Count Your Blessings Instead Of Sheep" is yet another gem; Jimmy sings faultlessly with a lovely orchestration and this is certainly a highlight of the album. "When The Circus Leaves Town" is very well done; and "I Believe" shines brighter than silver and gold when Jimmy performs it to perfection--and beyond! In addition, "Young At Heart" gets the royal treatment from Jimmy Durante; you can really tell what a masterful entertainer he was when you listen to numbers such as this. His sense of timing and sophisticated phrasing enhances the number all the more, too.

"Don't Lose Your Sense of Humor" is amazing in Jimmy's more than capable hands; and listen for Jimmy to do a fine job on other tracks including the classic "You'll Never Walk Alone;" "One Room Home" and the closing track, "Blue Bird of Happiness." "Blue Bird of Happiness" showcases Jimmy's talent one last time on this album; and it leaves me wanting more!

Jimmy Durante could never truly be forgotten; and with continued sales of CDs like this one his legendary status will increase as the years go by! I highly recommend this CD for any fan of Jimmy Durante; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals sung with genuine heart and soul will not be disappointed.

Jimmy Durante had a long, unblemished career in show busines. (Just TRY to find negative articles about this sweet man.) Much of his musical and movie output was loud, raucus comedy. Late in his career, he put out three albums of standards backed by big band arrangements and full chorus. This 1962 collection was the first of the three albums. The other two were 1964's "Hello Young Lovers" and 1965's "Jimy Durante's Way of Life". You will find on these albums some of the same songs used so effectively in movies such as "It Could Happen To You" and "Sleepless in Seattle". Sentimental, a little sappy, but so beautiful. Jimmy Durante's musical maturity shines in these recordings. GET ALL THREE.
