Editorial Reviews

Les Discrets, the new band founded by Fursy Teyssier (Alcest, Amesoeurs) brings a crossover of Post Shoegaze Rock and Black Metal. Les Discrets (the discreet ones) are those creatures that live in nature and who bring nature to life, the ones who make the leaves move, who put dew on the flowers each morning, who throw the pollen in the air. That's a parallel life that we are not able to see, but that many of us can feel. For Fans of Alcest, Agalloch, Katatonia.

From the seemingly incestuous French black metal shoegaze scene comes another amazing band, Les Discrets. Think Alcest with a little more edge and a more gothic kind of vocal styling. You have the crushing guitars, soaring melodies, and pounding rhythms, and this is an album for any fan of Amesoeurs or Alcest. Get it, show your support, and love the scene! Also, that cover art is bloody genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Les Discrets (Discreet) Resurrection of Music. September 14, 2010
By John
Format:Audio CD
The first time I listened to Les Discrets a new curiosity entered into the world. Post-rock is a firm yet way overused genre, if executed properly it falls into the category of deep emotion; Les Discrets manages to do so with this new and improved sounding wave of post black metal. Every song left me satisfied, they never rushed anything, it flows so well. My first listen to one of the songs was "please don't start the chorus yet, wait some time to let the song fall into place, don't rush it" and yes, they did wait the good 20 seconds. Every song has left me wanting more, I haven't even found the need to seek out more from this genre, I have been captivated by Les Discrets. Les Discrets has no room for improvement, only a difference in creativity in a hopefully later released album. They create such a strong atmospheric sound; several parts of their songs are truly beautiful. Beautiful and Black Metal? What? Yes, the perfect combination between genres creates a natural blend. This band eliminates any dichotomy between post rock\atmospheric\black metal. The artwork has so much originality that it is worth buying the real CD over the MP3. Every lyric has so much depth and a passion that runs so deep to the heart. This CD is a one of a kind, and I feel bad for anyone who will fail to appreciate this CD. The word pristine is a mere word when used to describe Les Discrets; absolute perfection are the only words that can be used to describe this creation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oustanding!! April 23, 2010
By Alan R
Format:MP3 Music
I first heard Les Discrets when I got the split between them and Alcest. This is musically in the same vein as Alcest, Negura Bunget, or perhaps Agalloch, but it doesn't contain as much of a black metal side (at least vocally) as those bands, even though it can be argued Alcest doesn't have much of one either. Don't be put off by this, however. If you like any of those bands, it's almost a guarantee you will like this cd, it's just that good. This is a must pickup if you are a fan of this type of music.

The title of the review says it all. It's great from start to finish. The album just feels so deep, so vast. I was originally on the fence about buying it, but then I looked at the cover art.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is how all doom/black metal should sound. February 26, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Formed by Fursy Teyssier of Alcest, this cd, I feel, is the better of the two. I love Alcest but they are much more soft and sombre than Les Discrets. This band features more black metal/progressive sounding stuff and not since Opeth have I heard a band mix acoustics with electric quite as well as Les Dicrets. A couple fo songs involve the lead guitar segment over the chord progression actually being an acoustic over an electric and it doesn't at all sound odd or out of place. Whether it is Fursy's songcraft I don't know, but they know how to compose music better than 99% of the same bands within this genre, whether you call it Post-Rock, Post-Black, Black Metal, or whatever.

For my money I consider this a mix between "Dance..." era Katatonia in terms of tempo and riff style, Opeth in terms of the progressive mix of soft vocals, heavy and acoustic guitar, as well as some groove/bluesy aspects, and Enslaved for another different type of progression within metal. Les Dicrets isn't heavy music and there are no growls, but the music is sung amazingly well, even better than Alcest but still comparable. But then again, at least 3 songs are very strong metal songs. That's what makes this band so great. You don't get the same thing every song like most bands like this. I'd highly recommend them to fans of the 4 bands I already mentioned and anything qualifying as "Post-Rock/Metal". It is beautiful music and I have to confess the main thing I would say is negative about this cd is that it's too darned short. I think it comes in at under 35 minutes of actual music, but it's so well made and worth repeated listens on a regular basis, I really don't let it get to me too much.

Side note: how awesome is that album cover? The artist has some great little illustrations inside the case as well. That was the first thing that drew me to this cd and I consider it one of my favirote covers.
