This review is from: Seraffyn's Oriental Adventure (Paperback)
This is the fourth and final book in the Seraffyn series that chronicles Lin and Lary Pardey's meander around the world in their 28 foot wooden cutter. They have a very comfortable and easy going writing style that pulls you into their story. This is a wonderful series whether you are a sailor or not. - Regarding the previous reviewer's comment about storm tactics - The Pardey's have a newer book "Storm Tactics Handbook" which includes and adds a great deal to some of the chapters from this book. It is a must-have book for the ocean cruiser.

The description of storm survival while hove-to during their northern Pacific crossing makes this book a must purchase for anyone planning (or dreaming of) a voyage across any ocean.

I just found the Pardeys Bull Canyon. It takes off where Seraffyn's Oriental Adventure quits.I really enjoyed all of the previous books in this series and this latest one reads just as well. Why do I like these books? these folks know how to keep the romance in sailing.

The End?,

Phew, what an adventure. It took the Pardeys 11 years to (unintenionally) circumnavigate this world in a tiny, nevertheless very seaworthy 24-feet cutter.Generously they let us participate in 4 volumes that give an exciting, instructive account of seamanship, of success and failure, ups and downs of a life of meandering on board of a nutshell without engine or electricity. Certainly because of this Lin and Larry became experts in sailing and in telling their story. No question, I have read all four volumes several times, and still I am looking forward to restart for I am sure I'll find a new aspect that I haven't been aware of before. These four adventures with Seraffyn represent for me the most wonderful, appealing and motivating what you could read on sailing; even Bernard Moitessier whom I hold in high esteem and whom I dearly recommend to read comes only second. Seraffyn's Oriental Adventure takes the restless couple to Israel, through the Suez Canal, and by way of Japan finally back to their starting point. We learn how to survive tropical storms, and why (and how) their journey comes to an end - only to restart with a new, slightly bigger yacht; a journey that has continued until today. Unfortunately, Taliesin (respectively her crew) doesn't tell her adventures as her predecessor. You might get ideas by means of Lin and Larry's other books, and by browsing through their website. |
