5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Album for the open minded
I consider myself very open minded having favorite albums by Frank Sintra, Slipknot, Eminem, Dead Can Dance, Deep Forest, etc. Of course being a huge fan of System of a Down had me researching Serj. Luckily I came across this collaboration and listened to some samples on this site. The samples are just not sufficient to decide whether you may like it or not. You really...

2.0 out of 5 stars Adventuresome but sophomoric
I love CDs like this: two disparate styles crashing into one another. But this one just doesn't gel for me. It sounds like they layer on sounds to fill the empty spaces rather than to communicate. Sounds almost disingenuous, like they're playing in the studio, singing fakey foreign vocals, etc. It sounds like they don't have the life experience to inform the music with...

Luckily I came across this collaboration and listened to some samples on this site. The samples are just not sufficient to decide whether you may like it or not. You really NEED to purchase the album and support the brilliant minds that put together this music. It really reminds me of Dead Can Dance with some Deep Forest. If you haven't heard Dead Can Dance either, I would recommend it. This album is great through each track!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brillant and Unique CD, May 28, 2003

Serart is the collaboration between Serj Tankian from System of a Down and Arto Boyaciyan. The cd far exceeded any of my expectations. It is a true aural trip for the listener. It is truly an eclectic mix of music from tribal drum rhythms to Middle Eastern beats. In a few of the song you even get a jazz feel (esp. in Cinema, one of my fav., and the Walking Experiment). Tankian and Arto voice are interwined throughout the album complimenting one another. Tankian's voice never fails to amaze me. Leaving Melody Counting Fear the combination of Arto and Serj's voice make this my favorite song on the CD. Narina is also driven by the vocals Arto and Serj are joined by Jenna Ross. Black Melon has a primal feel that can take you back to the dawn of time. Facing the Plastic is should be noted for the great beat and vocals. Claustrophobia is a spoken word track. As Tankian trademark the words throughout the album are thought provoking
Tankian said when he heard Arto for the first time he thought of the sound was pre-civilization. Well, the two have them have capture the feel the cd is trip through time, space and regions. The songs are often hauntingly beautiful. This is true a unique cd and with each listen seems to reveal another layer. By far one of the best cds I have heard in a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars the most beautiful album of the new millenium, April 23, 2005
This review is from: Serart (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
This is the most beautiful album I have ever heard. I recommend it to every music fan. It is not your typical rock album, but cultural Armenian music. I wish I would have discovered this sooner. I don't know how anybody could not appreciate it. Even though it is by Serj Tankian it is nothing like System of a Down. Not saying that in a negative way. It is just something that will really sink deep into your soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good album, June 11, 2003

This album is beuatiful. The first track I experienced was Narina, and I was blown away by it. So now I was very excited about the album, and rightfully so. The day I got the album I spent most of the waking hours listening to it on my headphones. If you are a fan of forward thinking musicians, world music, and creativity, check this album out. Its well worth it.

Please just get this album and blast it out your windows. Get one just for your car. Get one for a friend. I wish I had enough money, I swear I would go around my block and put it in peoples mailboxes. I'm not crazy, its not like I'm saying this is the single greatest piece of music ever created but I'm just trying to get my point across on how good the album is. How many other albums have you seen on amazon.com have all 5 star reviews? This album is fun to listen to and it doesn't get boring because each song sounds different from the next. And every song sounds good. You can go through the album from track 1 to 16 easily. Spread some of the music on this cd around because people need variety in their lives every once and a while. This is just a huge wave of freshness in a society where every new hit single sounds just like the last hit single.

5.0 out of 5 stars Serart, July 4, 2005

This is an excellent album. Serj and Arto are two of the most amazing, talented, and daring artists of our time. A daring experiment, but I believe whole-heartedly that it was well worth the effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five stars are not enough!, December 10, 2003

Serart's music is unbelievably, unearthly beautiful. This is art in its purest form. I made the mistake of taking my first listen while on an hour-long drive, and I say "mistake" because I don't remember the trip. I felt as if my skull had opened up; the music was a cool, refreshing breeze blowing across my brain. For hours afterward I was just in awe. I have unwittingly searched my entire life for this album.

A caveat: if you are an old-school SOAD fan, you will appreciate this, because you understand at least a little of Serj Tankian's quirkiness and artistry. If you are already a fan of Arto Tuncboyaciyan, this is right up your alley. But if you are looking for another nu-metal release or if you have little respect or understanding of art or of Armenian culture, don't bother with Serart. I don't say this to alienate anyone, but you must truly open your mind and have no expectations but of a beautiful journey to enjoy this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most visual aural CD of the year, August 16, 2003
By
This review is from: Serart (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
Don't listen to this while you are driving because you won't see the road. My first impression, in more mainstream (?) terms, is that it sounds like a middle eastern early Zappa album with a strong dose of Oingo Boingo. This is a great collaboration that should be on everyones shelves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mardi Gras anyone???, June 28, 2003

This cd rocks!!! I didn't know what to expect. The first time I listened to it, I just fell in love with it. It really takes you somewhere else. Devil's wedding in particular. That song makes you feel like you are at Mardi Gras. And I still have not come back yet.
I really was not expecting something this good. I was definately proved wrong.
The DVD that's included is like a 15 minute out of body experience. There's almost too much to take in all at one time.
It's hard to put a label on the album. There's a little bit of everything. Tribal, metal, jazz, spoken word (the spoken word track is beautiful).
Serj has outdone himself. SERIOUSLY!!!
