Book Description

0781810493 978-0781810494 August 31, 2004 Bilingual
Serbian is the language spoken in Serbia and by the Serbs who live in other parts of the former Yugoslavia. Due to its similarities to Croatian, the two languages used to be fused into Serbo-Croat, which was the official language of Yugoslavia until the break-up in the early 1990s. The user of this dictionary and phrasebook, however, will be clearly understood in Serbia and Montenegro as well as in most of Bosnia and Croatia. Included are a bilingual dictionary with more than 4000 entries, a concise grammar, and a comprehensive phrasebook for students, travellers and foreign aid workers. A commonsense pronunciation guide enables users to speak Serbian without learning the Cyrillic script. A brief history of the language and cultural information are also provided.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for starters, October 9, 2005

This review is from: Serbian-English/English-Serbian Dictionary & Phrasebook: Romanized (Hippocrene Dictionary & Phrasebooks) (Paperback)
Has all the features you could want for those learning the language. It is a little lacking, in that it doesn't have more obscure words in the dictionary. The phrase-book and lists are useful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, October 10, 2010
This review is from: Serbian-English/English-Serbian Dictionary & Phrasebook: Romanized (Hippocrene Dictionary & Phrasebooks) (Paperback)
I picked up this book for a trip to Serbia and Macedonia.
This book was excellent. Not only was I able to communicate effectively with the Serbians I met, but also the Macedonians and Bulgarians, because their languages are so similar. For basic conversation this book is great. I was able to keep it in my back pocket wherever I was and pull it out when needed. You wont be fluent in the language after using this book, but it at least gives you the basics that you need to start. There are a few sections in the book that seemed useless for me, "War" and "Relief efforts', but I see how those could have been useful depending on where you are and what you are doing. Also this is a fairly cheap book, which is nice as you dont have to worry about breaking the bank for a phrasebook, and worst case scenario if you do not find it useful, buy another one, since you didn't spend alot on this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars waste of time and money, June 28, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Serbian-English/English-Serbian Dictionary & Phrasebook: Romanized (Hippocrene Dictionary & Phrasebooks) (Paperback)
This dictionary has words that haven't been used in english in my lifetime. Useless words when that space could have been used in the book for more useful terms. Also some of the translations are horrible. If you want to learn useless information buy this book. If not then look elsewhere. There is a lot of military words in here but I will never have to tell a serbian there is an air raid or ask where i can buy a bayonett, or the other things in here.
