A GREAT REVELATION! MUSIC THAT MUST BE HEARD!, January 30, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Serebrier Conducts Serebrier (Audio CD)
The name of JOSE SEREBRIER has been familiar to most music lovers and record buffs for his vivid, brilliant interpretaions as conductor, with such orchestras as the London Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, etc. But his own compositions have not been that familiar. Besides a few short works, mostly on the ASV label, there hasn't been a major release devoted entirely to his music. The new Reference Recordings CD is most welcome because it helps us to discover a major composer of international status, great originality and profound message. The PARTITA (Symphony No. 2)is a brilliant master- piece. The FANTASIA for strings is a highly charged, new-romantic utterance, truly touching. The SOLO VIOLIN SONATA (written, incredibly,at age 9!)is idiomatic, vulnerable, exquisite. And the best of the lot is the final rousing work, the six-minute WINTERREISE, written a few months ago especially for this recording. Hopefully, you have very thick walls, well sound-proofed. This music will make you jump off your chair! The recorded sound is unbelievable. RR has done it once again. The London Philharmonic seems to be having the time of their lives. M.F.

The Orchestra in All Its Glory, August 6, 2009
This review is from: Serebrier Conducts Serebrier (Audio CD)
José Serebrier (b. 1938) is a conductor who is not all that widely known. Some readers may recall that early in his career, Serebrier was identified as a protege of Leopold Stokowski. As little known as he is as a conductor, he is even less known as a composer; how fortunate, then, for both him and for us that the small audiophile label, Reference Recordings, has undertaken to produce and release this wonderful CD of Maestro Serebrier conducting several of his own compositions. Sonically and musically, this is a truly splendid disk, and I hope that Reference Recordings will be able to sell this disk in sufficient numbers to justify their investment. Trust me--if you like modern orchestral music, this disk will more than justify your investment in it.
The disk opens with a work titled Partita (Symphony No. 2). This fairly short four-movement symphony (total time, 28:26) is long in musical interest and sonic excitement, including a big bass drum providing emphasis in the first movement and an exciting percussion battle that takes place in the final movement. Amazingly, Serebrier wrote this work when he was 20 years old.
The second piece is Fantasia, a 12-minute work for strings that is more somber and reflective than Partita, but which also maintains musical interest throughout. Fantasia was composed in 1960, two years after Partita.
The third piece on this recording is Sonata for Violin Solo, played on this occasion by Gonzalo Acosta. This is Serebrier's Opus 1; he wrote it in 1948--yes indeed, folks, he undertook writing this sonata, after taking a few violin lessons, at the age of 10! The recording is rather distant, with plenty of hall sound.
Fifty-one years later, the final piece on this CD, Winterreise, came into being as Serebrier decided to take some of the music found in his Winter Violin Concerto and make it into a purely symphonic piece. Some of the themes tie back to the Violin Sonata. This is a colorful piece, emphatic and churning with energy, with plenty of sonic interest.
All in all, this is a wonderful CD, and I recommend it highly to those who love the sound of the symphony orchestra in all its glory, and to those who love to show off what their audio systems can do when asked to reproduce first-class orchestral showpieces. Reference Recordings has certainly lived up to its name with this disk.
