Product Description

About the Artist

The East Coast Chamber Orchestra (ECCO) was created in 2001 by a group of like-minded musicians striving to infuse a conductor-less chamber orchestra with the agility and verve of a string quartet. The members of ECCO first met as colleagues and friends at leading music schools and festivals across the country and have gone on to lead diverse careers as soloists, chamber musicians, and orchestral players. For a few concentrated periods of time each year, the ensemble meets to participate in the unique and gratifying process of democratically-run rehearsal and musical exploration. Seating rotates for each work within a program and all members are involved in leadership roles. These rehearsal periods culminate in performances and outreach presentations which have earned ECCO praise across the country and abroad for its passionate and insightful music-making.

Saw ECCO yesterday in an intimate setting (the Perelman/Kimmel Center, Philadelphia). We were astounded; we went hoping to recapture the old 'glory days' of The Concerto Soloists, or maybe even Wild Ginger. This exceeded both. Their tight yet agile fluidity is nothing short of amazing, probably because of their 'organic' approach to musicianship. I bought 3 copies of this CD at intermission.
Far from any concern about a classical 'snooze-fest', these guys are simply amazing, and put on a concert which was the most energetic live music I've seen since the Carolina Chocolate Drops.
The first piece was "Fratres" by Estonian composer Arvo Part, and in the extremely intimate setting where we saw it (I could have reached out and touched the musicians), it had immense power even though parts are almost inaudibly quiet.
They then did Benjamin Britten's "Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge", absolutely cinematic in it's varying themes and rolling aural 'snapshots', including one passage where most of the strings (including cellos) are strummed like banjos. Captivating.
They finished the afternoon with a Mozart and a Bartok, and managed to give new energy, color and intimacy to both.
This medium-sized (maybe 20 instruments) chamber orchestra is unusual in that they are probably too large for most to consider a 'chamber ensemble', and have NO CONDUCTOR. They get together regularly to intensley work up a new playlist over a period of months, then tour it to some of the East Coast's best venues.
The result is remarkable; the intimacy of a chamber ensemble, or even a quartet, but with the depth of an orchestra. They want to sound like a string quartet, and they do but with added layers that make you swear there is a wind section on stage at times.

ECCO's arrangement of La Follia is alone worth the price of the album. This is definitely worth the investment. ECCO's style is excellent.
