4.0 out of 5 stars A fine "Freshman" effort, June 2, 2001

This review is from: Serendipity (Audio CD)
As a fan of both "progressive" and traditional folk music, I place this recording firmly on the edge where those two worlds meet. I have followed Stonecircle's musical career since their earliest days, and I was glad to see a recording finally appear.

The strengths of this group lie in their arrangements of the various tunes. Stonecircle takes some traditional ballads and instrumentals, some non-traditional and original tunes and then makes them their own, with a firm nod towards and appreciation of traditional folk. Yet they also nod towards modern chordal and vocal sounds that reflect their wide interests and influences from such diverse (and unusual) sounds as Yes, Phish, Malicorne, Alan Stivell, Altan, Renaissance, and so forth.

The arrangements of their songs here are sparse, yet not bare, emphasizing clarity. This is their first recording, and it is as if the band is feeling their way around the studio, getting used to the sound and possibilities of recording their music. But they make the adjustment carefully, and successfully. Rather than wallowing in electronics and atmospheric moods, the acoustic instruments are allowed to speak with their own voices. There is a lot of emphasis on melody here, without the heavy use of "danceable" rhythm that is brought to the music today by many musicians attempting to replicate the popularity or danceability of rock/hip-hop/etc. (You won't find Riverdance style dance arrangements or complex polyrhythms here, for example)

If you're expecting "New Age" music, this album isn't it, nor is it an attempt to replicate traditional folk music of the British Isles (none of the musicians claim to be "folk" musicians). It is modern folk, with the flavorings of tradition, seasoned with a dash of modernity.

Their second CD, "Alchemy," is also available now, with some new band members (and instruments) in the mix. Look for it on their homepage, or listen to the downloadable MP3s.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lucky You!, April 21, 2001
This review is from: Serendipity (Audio CD)
Congratulations, you have managed to locate one of the best groups to hit the music world, even if they don't get the credit they deserve just yet!! I have been lucky enough to see these folks in concert - if you get the chance, do it!! This cd is amazing, and only a hint of the magic they bring to the stage! I hope to see more of them, and another cd!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Celtic music!!, February 12, 2001

Serendipity is truly incredible--Celtic music at its best. Make sure you listen for the unlisted, hidden track at the very end--one of the best things on the album. Our second child was conceived to this music. It's the kind of music you can listen to for hours, and I can't wait for their second CD!
