I can't tell you how many of my 50+-aged female friends have asked me, in low embarrassed tones, if I have any problems with "leaking." They seem so relieved when I tell them that, oh, yeah, I've got a dribbly bladder and have had for years. They then confess that they do, too.

Hey, after all they've been through, old wimmins' bladders can get a little leaky. It's not a disease. It's normal aging. I don't want the pharmaceutical companies to make obscene profits off of me getting old (it's not a sense of urgency, anyway; it's occasional slight leaking), but I haven't been satisifed with the usual solution of using sanitary napkins to catch the dribbles.

I don't agree with a lot of folks here that the usual sanitary napkins are an acceptble substitute. Not if you aren't changing them quite frequently. A sanitary napkin is usually changed every four hours, more or less. The material they are made of is not designed to hold up all day, and certainly not all day and all night (or more, if you forget what day it is). They bunch up and get yucky and start coming apart at the seams. Even the Poise brand of incontinence pads (for me, anyway) don't hold up that well if worn longer than 12 hours, and I don't like the shape as much as I do the Tena pads.

So I like the Tena pads. They are made of a densely packed material, and I don't much notice I even have one on. They are folded up into a little tiny, tidy square with wrapper. I've gone through a 24-hour trial with one, and it's held up well. I don't notice a baking soda odor; I don't notice any odor at all, even after I've been wearing it for a while--which is the point. The adhesive is great (firmly adheres) and the length is, too.

Several months ago, I had abdominal surgery that disrupted some major systems in my body, including my ability to urinate. It's a really horrible feeling to wake up and want to run to the bathroom, but you can't "run" because of surgery, and you can't make it to the toilet in time because of surgery!

You've got several options in a situation like this: work madly on Kegel exercises (check); go through your entire underwear drawer in a few days and do a lot of laundry; take pills; or use a sanitary product.

The pills were a no-go, and the idea of "Depends"...? No, I don't think I'm QUITE there yet! So while I'm waiting for the Kegel exercises to kick in, this type of product seemed like a good idea.

The pads really are discreet. They're folded in thirds, in a small plastic pouch that's useful to dispose of them later. It looks exactly like a pantyliner (this variety, though, is longer, so if you are a short person, you might find this a little TOO long in the crotch.)

The pad is very thin, but wow, it is absorbent! I usually have my little mishaps when I'm waking up and can't quite make it in time to the bathroom, or I get a sudden urge to go and I just don't have the strength yet to hold it in. It's not like it's a lot of urine, but even a dribble is enough to make you uncomfortable (and I'm really getting tired of changing my panties three or four times a day!)

All I can say is that the pads WORK. They're completely comfortable, no more obtrusive than a pantyliner, and yet they're so absorbent you don't even realize that they just DID their job. That is, there's no "wetness," no urine smell at all. The surface is completely dry after the "dribble.

The big bold heading on this page just says "Teena Serenity Pantiliners." It's only in the description and reviews that I realize what I was getting. The package itself does not say "incontinence" anywhere except on the side in teeny tiny writing where it notes it's for "active women with light bladder leakage." Of course "Serenity" is a clue, but the package is not clear that these are not regular pantiliners.

Since several reviewers suggested substituting regular maxipads for Tena, I will do a comparison of Tena with Always Ultrathin Pantiliners and Always Infinity.

PANTILINER SIZE

So, how does Tena compare to regular Always? They're long, about 8 3/8" long. They are somewhat hourglass shaped, being a little wider at the front and back, about 3" at its widest width. They are thick. The little pouches with the pantiliners folded in thirds are at least ¼" thick.

Always Ultrathin Pantiliners regular size are 6 inches long, 2 3/8" wide and 1/16" thick when folded in thirds in the individual package.

Always Infinity maxipads are 8 1/2" long, 3" wide and 1/8" thick when folded in thirds in the package.

COMFORT

The Tena Pantiliners are not only thicker, they are stiffer than Always. It feels like there is a very thin piece of cardboard inserted inside. I definitely noticed when I wore these, whereas I don't even feel my Always pantiliners and Infinity.

DRYNESS

Did they keep me dry? Well, I only occasionally suffer from leakage. What leakage I had that day did get absorbed and I did feel dry.

ODOR PROTECTION

That part is difficult to ascertain.
