Book Description

July 22, 2004
A prominent South Florida rancher is murdered in cold blood in his wife's arms. The DEA raids her beloved Serenoa Ranch and seizes her property. The harassing phone calls start-again. For Maya Menecal, her idyllic life is thrust into a horrifying nightmare. Puttnam Jorgenson, the editor of the local newspaper in the small town of Sabal Springs, Florida comes to the rescue, inviting his close friend and for-mer DEA agent, John Spyers, from Maui, Hawaii to join him on a twisting and turning investigation into conspiracy, political corruption, and murder-all de-signed to conceal a deadly secret that could tear a community and an entire state apart. This strongly character-driven page-turner is sure to delight all true Mystery-Suspense aficionados. Sara Williams' characters leap off the page and into your hearts. Her intricate story is woven from the threads of the true-crimes and scandals she investigated and reported as a journalist.

More About the Author

Sara Williams and her husband Bill landed on the Island of Maui in their own sailboat some thirty years ago, intent on visiting an old friend. They loved Hawaii so much that they opened a business in Lahaina and stayed for a decade.

Sara, a magazine writer and newspaper reporter, became engrossed in the fascinating art, history and culture of Hawaii. Sara's third mystery,One Big Itch is her excuse to "talk story" about the Hawaiian culture she loves through the voice of soft-boiled sleuth John 'Oluhana Maalaea Spyer, a conflicted hapa haole, "half white," but polynesian at the core, too nice by half to be in the detective business.

When not sojourning in the Hawaiian Islands, the Williams are usually to be found in their other favorite haunts, the San Juan Islands of Washington State, or in the Florida Gulf Coast city of Fort Myers.

Sara's first novel, The Don Juan Con, was optioned in Hollywood by Producer Robert Evans for Paramount Studios. The Don Juan Con takes readers on a cross-country chase from the Forida Gulf to the San Juans Islands.

Sara's second novel, The Serenoa Scandal, set in the Okeechobee ranch country of Florida, was featured on PBS Florida radio and Expressions magazine. The Serenoa Scandal introduces John Spyer's mainland girlfriend Maya, a Cuban, and Spyer's journalist buddy Putt Jorgenson. The Serenoa Scandal is a prequel to One Big Itch.

This review is from: The Serenoa Scandal (Hardcover)
Sara Williams has once again written a fascinating work of fiction. In The Serenoa Scandal, murder, conspiracy, and political corruption not only threaten to destroy Maya Menecal's life, but the entire community as well. Set against a rich Florida backdrop, The Serenoa Scandal delivers a suspenseful, character-driven story that fulfills the promise to dampen the palms, race the heart, and entertain.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic, Romantic, Intriguing, February 20, 2005

This review is from: The Serenoa Scandal (Hardcover)
With sweeping descriptive details of Florida gator country, Sara Williams drops the reader into the middle of small-town dirty politics gone deadly. Her characters are given equal depth, from Maya Menecal, the fiery widow, to the enigmatic hapahaole investigator, John Spyer.

Williams uses her background in the newspaper industry to craft a complex tale of criminal intrigue that races through the Florida swamps to the asphalt jungles of Wall Street, New York City. She seems equally comfortable portraying the sinister mind of numerous bad guys as she is detailing the complex thoughts of a woman in denial and in love.

This book should work well for anyone who loves a well-crafted mystery set against lush, romantic backdrops.

This review is from: The Serenoa Scandal (Hardcover)
Reading the Serenoa Scandal was a pure delight. Sara Williams has captured the heart, soul and essence of southern Florida in this work. Time and again, I found myself startled at twists in plot when I was sure I had the culprit bagged and tagged. Sara Williams is now on my must read list along side Jeff Patterson and Sue Grafton.
