Buyer Beware!!!, September 6, 2009
This product contains pyrenthrins, which is extremely difficult for cats to metabolize. It continues to build up in their system, often causing death, or a lifetime of neurological issues. Some of these neurological issues could include: inability to walk correctly (for life), inability to balance, inability to properly care for self-cleaning, tremors, seizures, muscle spasms, permanent muscle damage, brain damage and death.
The instructions are ludicrous. They are appear deliberately "loose" in their interpretation and conflict. For example: "From A Distance Of Approximately 8-12 Inches Spray Pet Against The Lay Of The Coat, Fluffing Long Hair So Mist Reaches Pet's Skin (include The Legs And Underbody But Avoid The Face, Eyes And Genitalia). The Spray Should Wet Ticks Thoroughly. Apply At A Rate Of 1 Second Per Pound Of Body Weight. Reapply Every Week." - Please notice it tells you to reach the pets skin. Later, it says, "Harmful if absorbed through skin." And, in fact, it is so harmful that if you get it on your hand (not hard to do at a foot away - but it is hard to do a tummy and legs, but miss genitalia) you have to wash your skin for 15 to 20 minutes!!!
Also, the application is a pump spray, not an aerosol. The direction of 1 second per pound of body weight is vague and aloof. Surely their technology could meter out a pump per pound? Sergeant's has been around the block. They aren't likely to make a rookie mistake, unless it is on purpose or with knowledge of an issue in the description.
I am telling you this because last night I rescued a kitten who cannot walk steadily, has tremors, pecks at food, teeters, and has no sense of balance - among other related issues - which the vet attributes to long term exposure to this spray on him. He is in critical care currently. His mother also has the same neurological condition and also suffered long term exposure. Her mother also was exposed to the same toxin. Three more of his litter mates had the same neurological condition and all of them were raised with this spray being applied as instructed.
In addition, despite the previous owner's use of this terrible product, upon bringing him home, flea combing him once quickly, bathing him with a mild soap and flea combing him again, we collected the fleas we pulled off of this little fella in the toilet (except the 60 or so that ended up in the bathtub during the wash). There were, at a conservative estimate, over 300 fleas on him. The spray was encrusted on his fur from tip to "skin", and all it did was kill those fleas that were most visible and made the rest dig in deeper.
Don't waste your five bucks. It might be cheaper, but I would rather have a living, breathing cat, in tact and healthy, and no fleas. Sadly, the use of this product most likely has contributed to a large flea explosion in the home he was rescued from. Just because you cannot see fleas, they continue to lay eggs and the eggs continue to be deposited around your home. The estimate is for every one flea you see, there are 30 others in your environment. That means, just from this one small kitten, 9,000 fleas were crawling around somewhere in the home.
It's worth it to get Frontline or Advantage and get something that works. Just be sure you get the right dose, the right species and apply it correctly to your pet.
