5.0 out of 5 stars Edu Lobo: A Genius, September 11, 2001

Tombolino (Atlanta, GA, USA) - See all my reviews
If you are shopping for light bossa Jobim style, this is not the album you want. On the other hand, if you have ever dug Egberto Gismonti, Gil Evans, Milton...meaning, something different, innovative, a little dissonance, you must get this album. Hermeto Pascoal's intervention is also amazing

5.0 out of 5 stars Thanks, Verve, for reissuing a lost treasure, March 26, 2000

(REAL NAME)
SERGIO MENDES PRESENTS (Edu) LOBO was released as A&M SP 3035 in 1970, and up until now has only been available on CD as a Japan import. Let's hope Verve will keep reissuing those vintage A&M and A&M-CTI jazz titles we all love and miss! On this set Lobo combines a gentle vocal style with vigorous guitar playing, performing his compositions whose versions by other artists are more well known: "Crystal Illusions," "Casa Forte" and "To Say Goodbye" can be heard on Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 albums. "Ponteio" has been recorded by Walter Wanderley. Paul Desmond also recorded "To Say Goodbye." And J.J.Johnson & Kai Winding recorded "Casa Forte." In fact, three members of Brasil '66 participated on Lobo's album, Oscar Castro-Neves (guitar), Sebastiao Neto (bass) and Claudio Slon (drums). Other strong contributors are Airto Moreira (percussion) and Ermeto Pascoal (piano/flute). All tracts are strong, although some might not care for "Hey Jude," which is somewhat dated. Relax and enjoy -- while you e-mail Verve's website and encourage them to keep the vintage A&M jazz coming!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Exotic Adventure!, August 11, 2001
By
I have just recently started getting into Brazilian music, and this album is one of the resaons why. The pulsating beats, exotic rhythms and flowing melodies are something to behold here. All of the tracks are great, but my favorites were "Zanzibar", "Crystal Illusion" (a very trance-like song), "Casa Forte" and "Jangada". Even Lobo's version of "Hey Jude" is engaging. If I wanted to turn someone on to Brazilian music, I would start with this album. It's that good.
