This review is from: Serial ATA (SATA) or IDE 2.5 and 3.5 to USB 2.0 Cable Adapter Converter with Auto Backup Button Full 2A Power Supply (Electronics)
If you have a modern laptop or any kind of desktop, ignore this review - the product will work great for your use.I tested this adapter on an IDE 2.5 hard drive and it did not work. The problem is a lack of power. IDE 2.5 drives get their power only from the IDE interface, no external power supply can be used. More expensive adapters use two USB ports, one for data and one just for extra power. This adapter only has one, and from the way the red "active" light flickered dimly it wasn't getting enough to power the laptop hard drive I extracted for the test. Aside from that, this is a great little, cheap little product. Works fine for the IDE CD drives I tested, and will probably work well for IDE 3.5 hard drives and all manner of SATA drives... they all have a separate port for power, and this adapter comes with an external power supply to provide that power. Just don't get this for older (IDE) laptop hard drives. To tell which you have, pull the hard drive out of the laptop and look at the back. If it has a long double row of little pins with one pin missing close to the center of one of the rows, it is IDE. If it has what looks like a wider version of a USB port with a notch on one side, it is SATA and this adapter you are looking at will work. If you do have an IDE 2.5 hard drive, what you need is to go back to Amazon search bar and look for "IDE 2.5 enclosure." For all other listed hard drives (IDE 3.5, SATA 2.5, SATA 3.5,) get this adapter you are looking at now, it is great for the price.

Works great with an IDE drive that I pulled from an old PC. My only complaint is that the instructions were wrong about how to place the jumper, but once I figured that out it operated as advertised.

There absolutly no installation information or diagrams that come with this, so if you are not really sure what you are doing, best let a professional help. The IDE connectors work and fit fine for both an old ATA desktop and laptop harddrive and the SATA converter fits nicely. The power unit/converter is a little fritzy and doesn't fit all the way, but with a little elbow grease, it powers your old harddive fine. The length of the power cord is only 3 feet so if you were planning on using these cables to turn an old harddrive into an external, this might be a little cluncky and awkward for that. With that said, however, I am doing just that!
