If you have a modern laptop or any kind of desktop, ignore this review - the product will work great for your use.
I tested this adapter on an IDE 2.5 hard drive and it did not work. The problem is a lack of power. IDE 2.5 drives get their power only from the IDE interface, no external power supply can be used. More expensive adapters use two USB ports, one for data and one just for extra power. This adapter only has one, and from the way the red "active" light flickered dimly it wasn't getting enough to power the laptop hard drive I extracted for the test. Aside from that, this is a great little, cheap little product. Works fine for the IDE CD drives I tested, and will probably work well for IDE 3.5 hard drives and all manner of SATA drives... they all have a separate port for power, and this adapter comes with an external power supply to provide that power. Just don't get this for older (IDE) laptop hard drives. To tell which you have, pull the hard drive out of the laptop and look at the back. If it has a long double row of little pins with one pin missing close to the center of one of the rows, it is IDE. If it has what looks like a wider version of a USB port with a notch on one side, it is SATA and this adapter you are looking at will work. If you do have an IDE 2.5 hard drive, what you need is to go back to Amazon search bar and look for "IDE 2.5 enclosure." For all other listed hard drives (IDE 3.5, SATA 2.5, SATA 3.5,) get this adapter you are looking at now, it is great for the price.

Works great with an IDE drive that I pulled from an old PC. My only complaint is that the instructions were wrong about how to place the jumper, but once I figured that out it operated as advertised.

There absolutly no installation information or diagrams that come with this, so if you are not really sure what you are doing, best let a professional help. The IDE connectors work and fit fine for both an old ATA desktop and laptop harddrive and the SATA converter fits nicely. The power unit/converter is a little fritzy and doesn't fit all the way, but with a little elbow grease, it powers your old harddive fine. The length of the power cord is only 3 feet so if you were planning on using these cables to turn an old harddrive into an external, this might be a little cluncky and awkward for that. With that said, however, I am doing just that!

Mine did NOT have any sort of auto-backup button on it. No led to let me know it's working. it works unreliably with sata, doesn't work at all with the 2.5 inch ide drives due to not enough power. As a previous reviewer said, it needs to draw power from 2 ports to get enough to power a laptop ide drive. the sata feature works... most of the time. It has a separate power cable, like the 3.5 inch ide drives do. But it still timed out or was undetected frequently even so. No, I don't think the one I got was as described at all.

I have 2 of these. One for Home & one for work. They are GREAT for doing data recovery & virus clean up. Also good for running diagnostics on a dead (Blue screened) system. Plug it into a WORKING computer & take a peek. Also great for running backup copies of newly built systems. (using Ghost or similar utilities.)
I can't say enough about how useful of a tool this is to a computer geek geek.

So, my computer crashed and I thought for sure I lost everything on the hard drive. I brought it to best buy and they said the data on the hard drive was still recoverable and tried to talk me into paying $100 for 9gb of my information to be copied. When I said no, they tried to sell me an expensive external hard drive enclosure. I then went online and found this device. I was able to take my hard drive out of my dead computer, plug it into this device and then plug it into my new laptop and all my information was copied over to the new computer with ease. It's just like copying pictures from a camera to the computer. The new computer shows you theres a device attached, you open the folder and BOOM .theres all your old files you thought you lost. It's great and WAY cheaper than having best buy (or any other computer store) copy your information. PLUS you are assured security in knowing noone stole info from your hard drive.
If you need data from a hard drive, BUY THIS THING! it's great. And super easy.

You have to be very carefull connecting this device to your hardrive and make sure the connectors are intact because it falls apart if you put a little bit of pressure.Poor quality for the 20.00 I paid for it.

First and foremost, the adapter piece itself only _looks_ like the one shown on this page. There is no Backup Button, the IDE/SATA indicator arrows are on the underside instead of on top where everything else is. Looking past that, the first thing noticeable is that there's no instructions either on paper or a disc. Unless you know what you're doing or have someone who can help you, this isn't for you. I've limited computer knowledge that I've built up over the 10+ years so I managed to guesswork my way through it all, but I'm sure that there are other people who'll look at this literal bag of individually packaged items (yes that's how it arrived) and be scratching their heads. The one wire which isn't labeled so I've no clue what it's called (probably for SATA drives) actually looked as though it was cobbled together, as wires could easily be removed and put back in, so I can't even be sure it would've worked if I'd used that.
I actually haven't quite gotten it to work the way I want it to yet, but that's a technical issue I've already asked a friend to help with. Though that could have been alleviated by them including directions and proper usage material.

Cheap AND it works! You get all the cables and power supplies you need. I worked on SATA drives, haven't tried it on IDE drives.

for the price, this is an awesome tool, no drivers needed. just plug everything in (don't worry, you can't plug the wrong thing in) and you have easy access to bare metal drives.
