Editorial Reviews

Review

"If you like fast-paced action, great lead characters, and don't mind a few F-bombs and the occasional gore, DV Berkom is the author for you..."    -Jen Blood, Best-selling author of the Erin Solomon mysteries

"This book is without a doubt one of the most engaging, complex and enthralling mysteries that had me totally in its grip..."   -Confessions of a Reader

"...Serial Date is one of those rare books full of rich sub-plots and interesting, well-developed characters..."     -Night Owl Book Reviews

"This book is a mix of intrigue, humour (Bountiful is a particular favourite), romance, and a great selection of dysfunctional relationships...Why should you read it? In a nutshell it's a fast-paced, non-linear story with some creepy elements mashed together with a splash of romance and dark humour. What's not to like?"  -Indie e-books

"Berkom has this style down pat and the unique story seems to flow out of her mind like a flight of fancy. In Leine Basso she has created a genuinely interesting and challenging persona who will likely enjoy a long life in subsequent books. Berkom, readers, is terrific!" ~Grady Harp, Amazon Hall of Fame, Top 100 Reviewer, and Vine Voice

"Now this, this is what thrillers are made of: grit, spunk, no-nonsense and 100% unputdownability....Quite simply: Brilliant." ~Cath 'n' Kindle Book Reviews

From the Author

Serial Date is the result of a twisted dream I had one night that I couldn't get out of my head. When I sat down to finally write it, the words flowed effortlessly and I finished the book in record time. The best part of the process? Crafting the characters: Leine Basso--a woman who's trying to forget her sordid past as an assassin and forge a relationship with her estranged daughter; Detective Santiago Jensen, a man who, despite the threat of losing his rank and possibly his job as a robbery/homicide detective in the LAPD, still falls hard for Leine; Peter Bronkowski, sociopath, creator and producer of the hit reality show, Serial Date; Senator Buzz Runyon, a man who's only concern is keeping his unsavory sexual proclivities under wraps--at least until he's re-elected; not to mention several additional interesting and, as one reader put it, messed up, characters. And, don't get me started about Azazel...

I hope you enjoy reading Serial Date as much as I enjoyed writing it. If you do, then you might also want to pick up Bad Traffick, the next book in the Leine Basso series, now available.

***Warning: this book has violence, strong language, black humor, sleazy politicians, and sex. Close enough to the five essential food groups as far as I'm concerned. Definitely R-rated.

All the best,
DV Berkom

More About the Author

DV Berkom is a slave to the voices in her head. As the bestselling author of two award-winning thriller series (Leine Basso and Kate Jones), her love of creating resilient, kick-ass women characters stems from a lifelong addiction to reading spy novels, mysteries, and thrillers, and longing to find the female equivalent within those pages.

Raised in the Midwest, she earned a BA in political science from the University of Minnesota and promptly moved to Mexico to live on a sailboat. Several cross-country moves later, she now lives just outside of Seattle, Washington with the love of her life, Mark, a chef-turned-contractor, and several imaginary characters who love to tell her what to do. Her most recent books include Cargo, The Body Market, Bad Traffick, A One Way Ticket to Dead, and Yucatán Dead.

This book is a mix of intrigue, humour (Bountiful is a particular favourite), romance, and a great selection of dysfunctional relationships all of which result in an enjoyable but light reading experience. What I had the most difficulty accepting was the idea of the reality show 'Serial Date', perhaps this could have been explained more with a short scene (I'm thinking the director pitching the show to executives) but more likely it has something to do with my in-built dislike of reality shows... So, it definitely piqued my interest when the contestants started dropping like flies. ;)

Why should you read it? In a nutshell it's a fast-paced, non-linear story with some creepy elements mashed together with a splash of romance and dark humour. What's not to like?

If you like fast-paced action, great lead characters, and don't mind a few F-bombs and the occasional gore, DV Berkom is the author for you. Berkom writes with a gritty flair that will appeal to any connoisseurs of the hard-boiled genre. In her latest novel, Serial Date, the author -- best known for her Amazon-bestselling Kate Jones series -- continues to demonstrate her knack for kick-ass heroines with complex back stories, with Madeleine "Leine" Basso, a retired assassin hoping to make a new start on the straight-and-narrow. That dream goes out the window when Leine is hired for security after a member of the cast of Serial Date -- a reality show in which women vie to win the hearts of ex-cons whom they believe are actually serial killers -- is found brutally murdered. Sparks fly when our heroine meets sexy police detective Santiago Jensen, and things only get more complicated from there, when Leine's estranged daughter is kidnapped by the killer, intent on drawing Leine into his twisted fantasies of revenge.

Berkom is an intelligent writer who understands the nuances of plot, the importance of pacing, and how to create complex, sympathetic characters. It's difficult to take the gaudy world of reality television seriously, so Berkom doesn't even try -- she stops just shy of caricature by creating convincingly self-serving villains with compelling back stories of their own. If she occasionally crosses that line -- as with Senator Buzz Runyon, a career politician with a long history of indiscretions with farm animals -- Berkom invariably does so with a wink and a nod to her readership.

Seattle author DV Berkom (though originally from the Midwest, labeling her as a Washington State product lends a sense of authenticity to this her initial volume in the fine Leine Basso Mystery series, Volume 2 BAD TRAFFICK is now out for devotees) received her `formal' training in Political Science at the University of Minnesota. Her travels across the country and her life on a sailboat in Mexico added to the pungency of her writing style. Now she is at home with dishing up thriller series of books that focus on a strong female protagonist. She has found her niche.

It is a pleasure to encounter a book about the plethora of obnoxious Reality Shows that have crowded out even the boxing shows from the television screens. Oh, they have an audience - just count the viewer ratings on them - but Berkom has the guts to poke a little serious fun at the concept of `telling all to the general public whether they want to know it or not' that pervades these pastimes.

Madeleine (Leine) Basso is a retired assassin, takes deep breath and signs on in the role of security for the reality show Serial Date - the theme of which is women vying to win the hearts of ex-cons whom they believe are actually serial killers! One of the contestants, Mandy, is found dead in a closet, missing one ear and one arm. Police detective Santiago Jensen is on the case but Leine Basso is hired for show security measures. Bingo - the hunky Jensen and Basso exchange innuendoes, but the series of contestant murders, and the fact that Leine's estranged daughter goes missing (the abductor claims to be the real killer) alters the force of the murder investigation.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review and I enjoyed the story. The main character was a strong female lead with a "secret agent" type past. The plot was interesting and left plenty of room for the "who-dun-it" aspect of the book. As I read the book, I definitely became interested in the individual characters. Sprinkled throughout the book were tid-bits from each of the main characters lives, and as I read, I assumed that at some point, those tid-bits would all be brought together for a complete back story of each character. When I got to the end of the book, I didn't feel as though that had happened, and I was still left with quite a bit of curiosity. I think if I'd been able to get to know the characters better, I would have become more vested in them, and drawn further into the story which would have made the overall experience more enjoyable. It also seemed like the relationship between the female lead and her potential boyfriend could have developed a bit more and had a stronger close. I am looking forward to reading the second book and getting to know the female lead better and hope more about her is revealed.
