Two serial killers make a love connection, September 25, 2005

He's a clumsy but prolific serial killer who likes to let his hands do all the work and to "do things" with his dead female victims. She's a promising new psychotic murderer who prefers the fine hone of a sharp knife and has her own little rituals to perform after her kills. When these two crazy kids meet, it's love at first sight - sort of. When they try to kill one another at the same time, you couldn't fit one of Cupid's arrows between them, as the whole adrenaline rush of the situation serves as the ultimate aphrodisiac for these two birds of a feather. Will their love last? Will the killings continue? No, this isn't TV's latest reality show; it's Serial Killer Massacre, a film supposedly based at least in part on a true story (although I have no idea what story that would be).
See those people on the box cover? Well, forget them; I don't have a clue as to who those people are, as they are not in the movie. Jeff Murphy plays Ted, the beer-bellied, quick-tempered bruiser who hears (and follows) voices in his head urging him to kill all the time. He's not really that good at it, but he gets the job done. The police are obviously inept because this guy leaves plenty of clues behind in his wake. Kate Ryan plays Leah; she takes out her pent-up aggression on men. (In both cases, of course, it's really society's fault; both of the killers had bad childhoods, etc. I say just ignore the film's liberal spin on the creation of serial killers.) The killings themselves are really the most important thing about this movie, what with it being named Serial Killer Massacre and all. I'm not sure I would place anything in this movie in the massacre category. Ted does take care of a handful of people, while Leah dispatches at least a couple, but these individual kills aren't that impressive. There is one rather gruesome scene, though, involving a man in a bathtub getting a knife slash in the most uncomfortable of locations, but the truly horrifying aspect of this scene is the lack of sufficient bubbles in the bath, as I had to see a few things I really, really didn't want to even think about, let alone get a glimpse of. Movie summaries make it sound like our happy couple go on a mutual killing spree - I must say that this is not true. Once the lovers meet, there are no more killings whatsoever until their relationship begins to break down toward the end.
I'm having a hard time coming up with a rating for this film; like many a low-budget horror flick, it seems to succeed despite itself. The acting is not very good at all - I'm sure about that; the gore element is not as strong as I had expected; there are a few short scenes thrown in randomly that don't have much to do with anything. Still, for some reason, I rather enjoyed Serial Killer Massacre. If you're a fan of low-budget horror films, especially serial killer films, I say go ahead and give this one a try. If you don't enjoy movies of this genre, though, there's no possible way you could even sit through this 87 minute excursion into the darker side of humanity.
