Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This serious tome is a no-nonsense manual, with a half-page devoted to acknowledgments and a paragraph of the introduction to the first edition (1989). All the rest explains the intricacies of cataloging serials?publications issued in parts intended to continue forever. Beginning with sources of information, the book covers selected elements of description (areas 1, 3, and 6); access (access points, changes in responsibility and titles, related works, conferences, added entries, and uniform titles); and special formats (microforms, nonprint serials, and computer files). The authors use the case method and discuss problems encountered with real titles. Each chapter opens with a page or two outlining general issues, followed by cases illustrating the problems; the number of cases for each chapter varies. Information sources and USMARC records are shown for each case as well as the detailed line of reasoning used to arrive at the solution. Heavy going, but highly recommended as an outstanding tool for serials catalogers or cataloging teachers.?Sheila S. Intner, GSLIS, Simmons Coll., Boston
