Nevah, I just mean to grab attention- all of you who are "new" to Vinicius from his FINE cds that were released here in the last few years- it's never "Vinicius to excess"- just a play on words regards to this wonderful release!
The "excess" is in the fact that these recordings are quite dense, the 180 degree opposite of the current "minimalist approach" you hear on the USA releases.
(It is nice to be able to replace 2 old lps on a 2 for one cd- this Vinicius release offers 2 of 3 lps he recorded in Brasil from the mid 80's).

Now, this is important to advise, before Vinicius current incarnation as an influential practicioner of "Nova Bossa Nova" and his deep involvement in the New York underground scene, the journey musically began as a drummer in a progressive rock band, then on to making the fine MPB musics that this cd contains.
There is NO BOSSA NOVA here, just extravagantly produced(and at times, deliciously overproduced) MPB compositions, that , while retaining the individuality of the author, owe a debt to Caetano , Toninho Horta(pre-Pat Metheny), and a lesser extent, Marcos Valle. Influenced in the MPB tradition by MANY styles of musics, some of this cd is jazzy, some moderate funky, and a little of his "Prog-rock" flavorings are evident.
At times, (like some of Gonzaguinha's lps for example), the production overwhelms the composition.

You can still "hear" Vinicius through it all, if you will listen to the cd" sideways" "for fun". (do you know what i mean ?)

I dont like going "song for song" in the spirit of brevity, but I point out- you will hear a jazzy version of "O Grande Lance..." and a quasi disco-funk "Sem Pisar no Chao" later released on Vinicius' 1st USA cd "Sol Na Cara".

Not only can you see Vinicius' musical direction evolve, but the cd has an earful of sounds to enjoy from a different fase in his career. An interesting life, Born in Manaus, raised carioca in Rio, off to Portugal, and currently one of New York City's most musical resident..........give this one a try. Cant beat the price too! (BEM BARATO!!!)
