4.0 out of 5 stars Start of a Brazilian jazz legend, October 23, 2002
This review is from: Serie Estreia (Audio CD)
This is a much welcome reissue of Brazilian singer/guitarist Joyce's first solo album from 1968. She had first apprenticed herself to bossa nova legend Vinicius De Moraes, but then was poised to become one of the new voices for a renewal of Brazilian jazz that would transcend the Vegas-y cabaret affectations that typified much of the pre-tropicalia bossa acts. This album is still stuck in many of the musical habits of the time, framing her as just another richly-toned "girl" vocalist, cooing over some mildly intrusive orchestral arrangements (her guitar playing is, sadly, not much in evidence...) Yet Joyce's strengths as a songwriter and singer come through loud and clear. Anyone interested in the development of modern Brazilian pop might want to snap this hard-to-find album up while it's still back in print.
