This is really a review for the whole series - I have now finished all 5 books of the Max Starr series and I am stuck for how to rate them. I read them all back to back so to me it was like 1 really long story with a great if somewhat surprising ending. While it did eventually kind of live up to its title description of "erotic paranormal romance mystery" it was such a great story to me that the "erotic" part did not seem to clash as it does for me in many books. This is a great story and the fact is that none of the books in itself was that outstanding but the series as a whole was phreaking amazing. I think all I can say is that if you think you would like a story about a woman who witnessed her husband killed (who stayed around as a ghost to help her recover) and has to solve about 5 murders or more, is a emotional cripple at the start of this AND is a psychic. This is the story :) It does become highly sensual but not in the "Anita does Everybody" type, most of it is mental.. The mystery is not solved until the last book and the author has you guessing the whole time and at some point you suspect everybody, she does get a semi-hero cop that she has a relationship with through the books that will stretch your belief that a guy would put up with as much trouble as she is :) I highly recommend the series as a whole, not for the easily offended but a very good read
My review is based on all the books so a little spoiler below.
spoiler Max got on my nerves a lot. After reading the whole series I really understood her and everything she went through. Her past was bad and the things she was doing I hated. Book one Max really made me mad with the things she did. I really loved Witt. He did not care about Max past only the future they could have together. He put up with a lot from her. It is rare that I could read a series that got better with each book. The next book is always better than the last. That is why part one is my least favorite and part five is the best. I loved when Ladybird came into the story. She was hilarious. I love how it left an opening for another book but wrapped everything up.
A must read! I loved every book in the series! I am normally a vampire romance advocate but Jasmine Haynes is so good I didn't miss my vampires whatsoever! With non-stop action and an amazing storyline, she draws you in from the first chapter and you can't put it down. I laughed, cried, felt such strong emotions with these characters. Read all five books in the Max Starr series and now am sad it's over. When a great series touches you like this it's always bittersweet. Truly great, don't miss reading them, you won't regret it.
"Power to the Max" for me is the best book in the series thus far. It grabs you from the very first page and keeps you ensnared until the very end. There was none of the irritating constant bickering between Max and Cameron or between Max and Witt. Furthermore, there were less of Max's irritating incessant prurient thoughts. This book like it predecessors is a sexually explicit, fantasy, paranormal, mystery with a bit of romance. There is little or no humor in this installment.
The main mystery in this book was more engrossing and more complex. The underlying mysteries that continue to run throughout the series became more suspenseful and chilling. It hung darkly foreshadowing the events in this book and periodically rumbled angrily and prophetically heralding the coming terrible storm that is the ending of this series when hopefully all the question will be answered.
Some of Max's action in this story were irrational and illogical and made me dislike her a bit. However, Max's transition and efforts to heal were also apparent. Overall, it was an interesting read. I look forward to reading book 5 in the series. Although, I'm excited about the revealing of the mysteries underlying the entire series, I will be a bit sad to see the series end.(I gather from reading some of the reviews for book 5 that it is the last book in the series) One of the most important attributes of a good series is an author with wisdom enough to know when to end it and an author who has the imagination and talent to end it properly. Here's hoping Ms. Haynes is both!
There are some editing errors in this one but nothing too distracting.
This review is for the entire Max Starr series: I loved this series and the characters. Truthfully the books got better with each one. The story line kept me interested. It is "steamy" in some parts. The only thing that irritated me is at the beginning of each book the author recapped the previous, so if you are reading back to back (like I did) it was like, "yeah, yeah I know that already, let's get on with the new story line". But, I think if you haven't read the previous books that would've been an asset. Plus, that just tells you how much I wanted to know the new "story"! Great series! Would highly recommend... just plan to be up reading late at night reading if you are like me and chasing around little ones all day. You won't want to put these books down!
Just got better and better. I agree with the previous review that alone these books are ok, fun but as a series they really take on life. Book 4 really helped me relate to Max and a lot of her insecurities that were sort of stumbling blocks for me as far as liking her as much as I generally like the heroine. Again Witt's mom cracked me up in this book..what a great character. I want to be her when I grow up! Great dynamics grow in the mystery of this particular murder. Lots of twists and turns. You know a bad guy is a great bad guy when you want to crawl inside the book and kill him yourself. Reading these books in order will definitely give you a better appreciation of the heroine's maturity and psychic growth. LOVED this series.
I was happy to find this series after all 5 books were written so I could read them one after the other. The only negative thing for me was the amount of sexual activity on the part of Max when her life was continuously in danger. I would think if a killer was after me I would be wanting to get stronger locks for my house instead of having sex with my boyfriend in a car, truck, against a wall in an alley, etc.
