An album for blues-guitar afficianados and guitar players...,
By Sui Juris "Dave" (Michigan, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Serious Business (Audio CD)
If you love long, continually-vibrant, energetic guitar solos, then this album is for you. I play guitar, and Johnny's playing never ceases to render me slack-jawed! This album has it all---slow tempo blues (with piercing, snaking, rapid-fire soloing), fast tempo boogie-woogie (with piercing, wonderfully-driving soloing), medium-tempo shuffles (more soloing, of course), and more. Check out the title song at the end--its kind of a bluegrass/blues, finger-picking masterpiece (on electric, of course)--so driving, frantic, and utterly energizing! I have all of Johhny's CD's, and this one is definitely among his best (along with "3rd degree" and "Let Me In".

This CD is unreal. The song selection is excellent and Johnny's guitar playing is the hottest of his post Columbia career. This CD is in BAD need of a remaster. It is listenable and I recommend purchasing. In fact, this is the one CD in my collection that the material is so good it far outways the sound quality. Turn down the treble and crank it up, it's EXCELLENT.

this album would be 5 stars but the tinny tone from his guitar distracts from some of the excellent guitar solos, but beside that this album is excellent, great choice of material and johnny really rips it up on guitar. it the most energized i have heard him since his rick derringer days.

Almost 5 stars,

I do recall Johnny Winter saying in an interview that he wasn't happy with the overall guitar sound on this c.d. I have to agree with him...the lack of bass makes for a rather tinny sound. Nevertheless his outstanding technique still shines through. The choice of songs is absolutely 100% accurate.
Sound The Bell, Good Time Woman, My Time After Awhile are just so full of enthusiasm and energy. Infact, again, EVERY track is superb, i have to say. This one is well worth purchasing. I definitely do not regret having it in my collection.

God bless Johnny Winter. He never sold out, but continued to play the blues long after disco and soft rock had diminished its 1960s popularity.
Serious Bussiness is just the axe master playing what he always has played best--Chicago Blues. Some of the production on this album is definatively 1980s--notice there are no visable tuning pegs on Winter's guitar. But so what. His playing is even more dexterous and nimble here than on the 1970s Columbia albums--as a player, Winter just kept improving.

GREAT ALBUM FROM JOHNNY WINTER. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE OTHER REVIEWERS MEAN WHEN THEY SAY HIS GUITAR PLAYING HAS A "TINNY" SOUND. SOUNDS GREAT TO ME, WISH I COULD PLAY GUITAR LIKE THAT, PARTICULARLY WHEN HE PLAYS SLIDE GUITAR. NOTHING "TINNY" ABOUT THAT. LOTS OF LONG GUITAR SOLOS, NICE MIX OF OLD BLUES AND MORE UPBEAT SONGS. IF YOU LIKE JOHNNY WINTER, YOU WILL LIKE THIS ALBUM. PERIOD.
