Book Description

"...Devotion signifies a life given, or devoted, to God." So begins William Law's Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life. Originally published in 1729, Law's book stands as a powerful challenge to Christians. Law teaches that if God is "our greatest good," then the wisest way to live is to please God through a life of worship, adoration, and devotion. Since many fail to live this way, Law diagnoses why and suggests certain concrete practices as a remedy. Thus, no one interested in becoming more devout can ignore this dynamic book. Law's call has encouraged several generations, and does not fail to encourage believers even today with a serious call to a devout and holy life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Kindle version of a Classic May 18, 2011
Verified Purchase
When I'm looking for books that are in the public domain, I often look for those that are free or less than $1. But often those Kindle books have serious formatting flaws. This version of William Law's classic has beautiful cover artwork and a working table of contents complete with chapter titles, not merely numbers. The formatting of the text has been cleaned at every turn ensuring an enjoyable Kindle reading experience that is easy on the eyes and flows well. For instance, the annotation links, rather than simply being a number in brackets in the same font as the rest of the text (breaking the visual flow of reading) are superscript numbers, allowing my eyes to flow through the text. This version is worth the extra couple of dollars to me.

It is amazing to me, as an eighteenth-century scholar, to have this kind of access to this very important text. Get it! Read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Seriously Heavy Reading December 24, 2012
Verified Purchase
Seriously, if you are looking to better understand the state of the Church today or the early days of the Methodist movement, this book is indispensable. The various personality types reviewed by Law are as true today as they were when it was written.

The book is not light reading, it is also not in modern English - you will want to have a dictionary handy. That said, Law makes some very good points and is well worth the trouble to read.
