Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-In this seventh entry in the series, Stevie, 13, convinces her detecting partner to try out with her as an extra in the film Night of the Neems. Jesse is immediately chosen as an orphan, but an unhappy Stevie barely makes it into the picture as a "neem," which means being covered in blue scales and wearing a faucetlike nose. Jesse convinces her to stay on by discovering that the movie's "curse" is really sabotage. The two suspect various actors and stagehands and stake out places where the perpetrator may be setting up "accidents" in some truly harrowing scenes. Comic relief is provided by Stevie's starstruck grandmother, who is visiting from England and volunteers to be their chaperon. Once again, readers are treated to Stevie's wise-guy perspective and a fast and funny story. While it may not be a first purchase, this is enjoyable fare to fill out mystery shelves.

From Booklist

Gr. 4-6. In these volumes, six and seven of the Stevie Diamond Mystery series, 13-year-old Stevie and Jesse, her partner in crime detection, stumble on unusual events. In Shine in the Dark, a family reunion on an island near Vancouver inspires the intrepid Stevie and the more fearful Jesse to probe decades-old family secrets and explore a frightening cave as they seek the solution to the mystery of why Stevie's uncle disappeared. Members of Stevie's eccentric family form the core of this entertaining cast of characters. In Silly Movie, Stevie and Jesse are hired as extras in a horror film. A series of unfortunate events convinces some cast and crew that the film is jinxed, but the young detectives prove that the explanation is sabotage and find the culprit. Readers will be intrigued by the culture and vocabulary of the movie set, which makes a colorful backdrop for the mystery. Bailey is a Canadian writer with a flair for crisp dialogue as well as snappy book titles. Carolyn Phelan

A Kid's Review
I had read the other six books in this series at least a thousand times over (but i didn't get tired of them!), and was looking for something new. When I got this book for Christmas, I pounced on it. All I can say is, you won't be disappointed. We meet some new characters, and different things happen, but it's still good old Stevie.
