It works,
This review is from: Serious Mass, 6 lbs (Health and Beauty)
I've used 3 different gainers over the past 3 months. N Large, Muscle Milk and now Serious Mass. N Large wasn't that great, Muscle Milk was pretty good (a bit too sweet for my liking), but Serious Mass seems to be doing the best job of them all. I've gained 5 lbs in the past 4 weeks or so - I put on 2 lbs in the same timeframe with Muscle Milk.
I don't use the recommended amounts - the provided scoop is ridiculously large, I can barely get it out of the container. I would say I used 2/3 the recommended amount with water. I have a shake in the morning, afternoon/evening and one around 11/12 at night. It's not the most mixable of powders, with water, but it's ok with a blender. Just blend enough for a few days so you don't have to mess with it daily. As a caveat, I do workout 5 times a week as well. I naturally don't eat humongous amounts of food and am what they call a hard-gainer. So if I gain weight with this stuff then it mus be pretty good.

I review everything I buy. Especially what I'm putting into my body. Optimum Nutrition is a reputable company who really knows how to make a great product. I'm a hardgainer like most people who will be using this product. I use a few more supplements from Optimum Nutrition and this is by far my favorite. Besides Serious Mass, I also have Optimums Gold Standard Whey (Chocolate flavor) and Creatine. Let me start off by saying that the Whey's flavor is horrible. I don't understand why everyone raves about how good it tastes. Its distgusting. Serious Mass however does not dissapoint. If you feel the same way about the taste of other Optimum Nutrition supplements don't worry, Serious Mass tastes awesome, mixes very well in a shaker bottle, and contains exactly what im looking for in a weight gainer shake.
PRO'S + Tastes great + Loaded with calories + Contains 3 different types of Protein. (Whey, Casein, and Egg Protein) + Very affordable + Easy on the stomach (Depending on the person this may be a problem if you follow the serving size. I'll get into that below) Con's - You may think getting a 12lb bag will last a long time. You couldn't be more wrong. Serving size is 2 scoops per shake. ONE SCOOP IS EQUAL TO 1 CUP OF POWDER. THAT IS ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE. Following the directions would cause to you finish a 12lb bag in 3 days. This is ridiculous. Half the serving and add your own ingredients. - Somewhat high sugar. This product does not add any sugar* However that doesnt mean it doesnt have enough already. its not very high. But its similar to a soda. ***Just to clarify for those that may not know this already. This shake is very filling. I expected this and it could be a good thing for some people but for someone who plans on taking this in conjunction with a meal, they may find it hard and feel very bloated after. Its recommended you eat normally and drink the shakes in between meals. I will be buying this product again and I would recommend it to those who want to try a great tasting weight gainer. You may need to experiment with your own add in ingredients like peanut butter or flaxseed oil to add more calories to makeup for the massive scoop size if you decide to half the serving size. All in all its a great product. I only wish they would have clarified how massive the serving size is a little more.

I have never tried any weight gainers or meal replacements before so I don't have a terrific base for my opinion but I used 1 of these 12 lb bags for a couple weeks and definitely found it useful. It gives you a full healthy meal (calorie and nutrition wise) without the time it takes to cook and eat a real meal. The only complaint I have is I feel this stuff really expands when it hits your stomach. This is undoubtedly due to the high carbs in it which is kind of the point of this but I could rarely have over 3/4 the serving size and the one time I used the full two scoops I became physically ill, not very nice. I plan to buy this again and would only suggest that people follow the directions to slowly work your way up to a full serving size. Besides that, blends well, tastes good, mixes with other things well. All in all I was very satisfied.

Great quick way to have a calorie-rich meal after a workout. Works pretty well in a shaker cup, helps to add about 1/2 water first, then a scoop, then top it off with water and shake.
Taste is not bad (I got the chocolate). It's not overly sweet but it is thick. Value is pretty good, considering you're getting a good carb source (maltodextrin), 25g protein, vitamins and creatine all in one product. Combined with some greens plus and some fat (mix with milk), you've got a solid meal replacement that won't kill you from malnutrition. The only downside is the packaging is awkward to store (dumping into a bucket works :). Also the bag split open a little during transit. It's 15lbs, so I'd expect them to make the bags a bit stronger.

Best weight gainer I've tried,

I've tried several weight gaining mixes and this is by far the best one. Some weight gainers have a lot of sugars in them making me feel sluggish and tired during the day. Not this one. Most of the energy in this mix comes from carbs and not sugars. Read the label on some of the other weight gainers and you'll see just how much sugars they put into their mixes! I use an Oster hand blender to mix it milk and it mixes really good and thick. I haven't tried the other flavors but I LOVE the chocolate. It's so far the best tastinng chocolate weight gainer I've tried. This weight gainer isn't the cheapest, nor is it the most expensive. It's a really good value.

I first purchased this product in March of 2009. Using two scoops mixed with skim milk and a little extra virgin olive oil (for more calories) over three 12lbs. bags over the course of 3 months, I went from 138 lbs. to 156 lbs. What previous reviewers have said is true. You MUST workout with this product, otherwise you will put on fat.

Not very good stuff,

I don't really understand all the good reviews this stuff is getting; to me Serious Mass tastes really bad and is very thick and hard to even stomach especially before an intense workout. This is all being mixed with 2% milk by the way (in order to maximize the calories). Being a college student I have no access to a blender and have just been using a shaker bottle. Whenever I take this product it gives me an incredible amount of gas and sometimes even a bit of nausea. I could not possibly imagine taking 2 full servings of this crap every day. If you ask me Muscle Juice is a much better more palatable product. I understand that the Juice has many more simple carbohydrates in it and that Serious Mass has more complex carbohydrates but I would still choose the Juice. Personally I don't not think it matters a whole lot how one gets the calories required to build muscle provided the body is being vigorously stimulated to grow muscle. This shake also tends to make you feel very full (either because of actual fullness or gas I do not know) where as Muscle Juice doesn't. It was because of this full feeling I actually felt like I was getting in less calories than I was without taking the gainer because I could not eat as much with other regular meals. So to summarize:
Pros: >more complex carb source than other weigh gainers >less expensive Cons: >pasty texture >horrible taste >causes lots of bloating >hard to mix w/o blender As this is a personal review, only my results are depicted and this product my work better for other for other people. |
