Amazon.com Review

We could talk about the Serious Sam backstory, but that would be missing the point, namely to commit carnage on a galactic scale. The smooth engine, multiplayer options, and fast pace make this game a solid choice for fans of first-person shooters.

The interface uses the tried-and-true Xbox formula for shooters: the left thumbstick controls movement and the right thumbstick controls the angle of view. The extensive arsenal is something special though, with each weapon possessing a different efficiency so you have to find the perfect weapon quickly for each situation. For instance, the shotgun is a great weapon for up-close fighting among a crowd of enemies, but it's horrible at a distance or when you're stuck in the middle of a melee. The enemy list is also quite extensive. You will be fired upon, stepped on, stabbed, slashed, and electrocuted. Enemies will appear by land, air, and water.

What makes this game stand out and keep you interested, though, is its irreverent, offbeat sense of humor. Serious Sam makes outlandish comments throughout the game, rides cosmic surfboards between scenes, saves progress at Dr. Who-like telephone booths, and pays homage to the Indiana Jones theme song. And you can change the blood splatters between red, green, and hippy (flowers and fruit). Our only major complaint is level design. Even when you believe you've cleared a room, enemies can pop out of midair and injure you. By not allowing you to seal yourself off from the onrushing masses in appropriate spaces, a major strategic element has been missed. --Eric Franklin

5.0 out of 5 stars Serious FPS!, November 15, 2002
This review is from: Serious Sam (Video Game)
First person shooter fans, remember that feeling you got when you first played DOOM, or Duke Nukem 3D?! If you've played any of the PC versions of Serious Sam, then you know exactly what I'm talking about. This game is far from being Half-Life, or even Halo, but if a fun, shoot-em-up is what you crave, then look no further than Serious Sam: Gold! This XBOX version contains both SSFE(first encounter), and SSSE(second encounter), plus awesome multi-player modes, split screen and XBOX LAN! For those not familiar with Serious Sam, it has very clean graphics, with tons of blood and guts! Awesome selection (serious firepower as Sam would say) of weapons, including shotguns, pistols, machine guns, and of course the Serious Bomb!!! Tight, responsive controls keep the game flowing, and simple too. Pick up Serious Sam: Gold, if you want a seriously fun game!

4.0 out of 5 stars READ THIS BEFORE BUYING, January 4, 2003

This review is from: Serious Sam (Video Game)
There are two different batches of this game that were made. One batch runs perfectly on the xbox. The other has long load times, awful frame rate, dirty disc errors and frequently lags up. I looked around in the forum on the official site and it seems that all copies that have the serial number TT00401A-L1 01 13 and TT00401A-L0 03 01 on the back of the disc are bad. Unfortunately, you cannot tell if the game is good or bad without opening it up first, so just open it in the store and if it's bad kindly ask for another one. You won't believe the looks you will get when you are on your 5th or 6th one, but hey. You gotta do what you gotta do.

Other than this one small technical issue, this game is great fun. It reminds me of doom. Every room is an ambush, monsters spawning behind you, secrets all over the place, etc etc. I love it. The graphics are pretty nice too, but the part I like the best is the sound. You will hear the creatures coming up behind you if you have surround sound. Almost every creature has it's own distinct sound that it makes. My favorite has to be the guys that run at you yelling and then explode when they hit you. Awesome game! Must have for any fan of doom.

5.0 out of 5 stars This game is a pure adrenaline rush - AWESOME!, December 14, 2002

I played Serious Sam 1 and 2 on the PC, but those games were nothing compared to the XBox version. The graphics absolutely ROCK, and the FPS rates are insane. You can move through 36 levels and it boggles the mind how many game play options you have available. I expected this to be pretty good and it is way beyond my expectations. Serious Sam is a non-stop adrenaline rush and an absolute BARGAIN.
